The Golden Gate Men's Chorus (GGMC) continues its 29th season under the direction of Music Director, Joseph Piazza with the spring concerts, "Canticum Sacrum, Canticum Novum. Join the men of the GGMC for what will be a bold program of sacred choral music from around the world, giving you a taste of the rich spiritual traditions that influence choral music to this day. From the rhythmic and percussive Islamic chant Zikr and the other-worldly overtone singing found in the Indian raga Ramkali to the commanding and impressive Dixit Dominus by Hideki Chihara, you will experience varied and captivating expressions of the Divine. We are also pleased and honored to perform several works in collaboration with Patrick Makuakâne and the Nâ Lei Hulu I Ka Wçkiu dance company, as well as the Piedmont High School A Cappella Choir Chamber Singers.
It is our wish that somewhere within this inspiring program from Music Director Joseph Piazza you will find your own canticum novum, a "new song" that will enhance your understanding of the forms through which people raise their voices to the heavens.
In the "Classical Voice" Jason Serinus says, "Quality is a given when it comes to the Golden Gate Men's Chorus. (The chorus) ... has such a high degree of musical proficiency among its members that the GGMC frequently tackles challenging repertoire that other community choruses tend to avoid." (5/11/09).
