      Christmas: Then and Now!
A joyous beginning to the Holiday season!
Bay Choral Guild Concert Dec. 10, 11, 12

Join Bay Choral Guild for an evening of song to warm your hearts! BCG presents Christmas: Then and Now! in Campbell, San Francisco and Palo Alto. This joyous a cappella concert highlights Christmas classics from the 16th to the 21st century, includes settings of familiar carols—“Ave Maria”, “Hodie Christus natus est”, “There Is No Rose”—by several different composers, and concludes with a set of delightful arrangements of popular carols by the Bay Area’s own Ken Malucelli.

The program opens with lovely, upbeat Medieval carols, including familiar settings of “In dulci jubilo” and “Joseph lieber, Joseph mein”, followed by gems from the Renaissance and some exquisite seasonal motets by such well-known composers as Byrd, Sweelinck, and Victoria. After intermission we’ll jump to our own time, featuring favorites by Tavener, Busto and Lauridsen, as well as introducing you to newer works by the Englishman Steve Martland, and Sanford Dole, BCG’s Artistic Director. Ken Malucelli’s exciting, upbeat arrangement of “Deck the Halls” brings the evening to a rousing conclusion!

It's a very interesting, and exciting concert. Sanford Dole, BCG's Artistic Director, has chosen a range of works that explores the development of Christmas carols from the Renaissance to today. While that sounds rather cerebral, it's also lovely, and challenging to sing. Each carol, or I should say, each era requires different vocal production to sing the works so they sound as they would have when first performed. The effect of the overall program is like a trip through a cappella time. And of course, he has chosen some of the loveliest carols possible!
