The men of the GGMC and director Joseph Jennings, follows their
soul-stirring, multiple ovation-garnering performance at this past summer’s GALA (Gay and
Lesbian Association of Choruses) convention in Miami, with the kick-off of
the newly named holiday series of concerts, christened “’Tis the Season!”
Jennings commented “I think it’s about time we came up with a branding that’s
synonymous with GGMC, the holidays, and our audiences who look forward to the
concerts each and every year.” Beginning with this very exciting debut
concert, GGMC’s holiday offerings henceforth, will be branded as “’Tis the
      Season!”
The concert will continue the tradition of their gorgeous candlelight
procession, plus feature stirring renditions of seasonal favorites, among them, a
jazzy arrangement of “Away In A Manger,” “Fum, Fum, Fum,” and “Dance of the
Sugar Plum Fairy.” The men of the chorus will span the globe, performing
carols in Spanish, Latin, French, German, and English. In addition, our
audience favorite, the Christmas carol sing-a-long, is guaranteed to surround and
fill the audience with the magic, spirit, and joy of the season. Having been
awarded Best of the Bay “Best Full-Throated Choral Explosion” by the Editors
and readers of the SF Bay Guardian, Joe Jennings and the men will continue
their annual holiday tradition by offering traditional, classic, and new spins
on familiar men’s chorus arrangements from their rich choral history.
“Counterpoint,” the highly regarded small ensemble, will also be featured
along with a few holiday surprises. Please join us for our annual holiday
concert series, now branded, “’Tis The Season!”
      About the Chorus
The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus (GGMC) was formed by Dick Kramer in 1982 as the
Dick Kramer Gay Men’s Chorale. Mr. Kramer, one of the founding fathers of
the American gay choral movement, envisioned a small men’s ensemble reminiscent
of university men’s choruses of 19th-century Europe. Reorganized as the
Golden Gate Men’s Chorus in 1988, the GGMC continues to present high quality
performances of men’s choral music. The GGMC presents spring, summer and winter
programs annually, in addition to guest and community benefit performances
      throughout the year.
The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus is a select group of 50 men representing the
ethnic and social diversity of San Francisco who share a common appreciation of
choral music. The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus is committed to excellence and
joyous music-making; providing a supportive and nurturing atmosphere for our
members’ artistic and social self-expression; and sharing and expanding the
rich and continuing tradition of male choral music.
The GGMC is proud to be supported by the San Francisco Grants for the
Arts/SF Hotel Tax Fund and is a member of GALA Choruses, an international
organization of gay- and lesbian-identified and supportive choruses.
For more information, visit the GGMC Web site at _www.ggmc.org_

The Golden Gate Men's Chorus (GGMC) begins its 29th season under the direction of Music Director, Joseph Piazza with the holiday concerts, "'Tis the Season—On Yoolis Night." The men of GGMC will raise their voices in festive cheer to the music of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern masters. On Yoolis Night will resound with brass choir, organ, and voices, featuring such compelling works as Heinrich Schütz' Magnificat and Daniel Pinkham's Christmas Cantata.

This time of year often calls us to reflection and remembrance. No music evokes such experiences of inner joy and peaceful contemplation as the compositions of Renaissance masters Jean Mouton and Philip Verdelot or contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen in his setting of O Magnum Mysterium, featured in this program. This concert promises to capture the spirit of Christmas from its ancient traditions in Medieval song to joyful, modern arrangements of traditional carols by groups such as Eclipse and Rockappella. After listening to the glorious, shimmering timbre of the Golden Gate Men's Chorus, we will invite you to join us in our traditional Christmas sing-a-long.

Allow us to wish you all the joy of the season with our holiday candlelight and our arrangement of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Who knows, we may even have a special visitor on this special evening called "Yoolis Night!"

In the "Classical Voice" Jason Serinus says, "Quality is a given when it comes to the Golden Gate Men's Chorus. (The chorus) ... has such a high degree of musical proficiency among its members that the GGMC frequently tackles challenging repertoire that other community choruses tend to avoid." (5/11/09).

We promise to make spirits bright with great choral music spanning five centuries from around the globe: Russian choral masterpieces, gems from the great English Renaissance, Gaelic carols, works by Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, and even a Beach Boys arrangement of Auld Lang Syne are just a few of the songs which will fill you with delight. We will even present "live in concert" Eric Whitacre's contemporary Christmas setting Lux Aurumque—"Light and Gold," recently featured in a "virtual chorus" performance on a YouTube video.
