A Cappella Group Takes a Bow at the "Izzies"
- Former National Harmony Sweeps champs SoVoSo were just honored with
the 1999 Isadora Duncan "Best Score" Award for their collaboration
with the Robert Moses' Kin dance troupe. Entitled, "Mother May I",
the piece featured a seamless set of improvisations by both singers
and dancers within various musical styles - jazz, funk, blues - then
wrapping up with their CARA-winning tune "Say". Members of the group
first experienced the blending of a cappella and dance while in Bobby
McFerrin's Voicestra - they co-created and performed "Dirt" with
McFerrin in 1993 for the ODC dance company. Both "Say" and "Dirt" can
be heard on SoVoSo's first album "World Jazz A Cappella", also a CARA
winner.... You can catch SoVoSo in concert Saturday, May 15 at the
Noe Valley Ministry in San Francisco...
