Samsara is an a cappella women's trio that unites extraordinary vocal
with passionate struggles for justice and fierce reverence for history
spirit. They build a vocal cathedral connecting the music of struggle,
and tradition, creating the new generation of the culture of resistance
empowerment. Samsara's repertoire ranges from traditional folksongs, sea
work songs and spirituals with new arrangements, to original music on
issues, all with tight, searing, dissonant and bittersweet harmonies and
intricate vocal percussions.
Rebecca Anders and Susan Appe (with
original member Jemie Ben Azay, recent member Loren Olds and new
Maryann Brooks and Leda Deitrich) are activists, teachers, musicians and
artists, and over the last six years as Samsara, they have been
everywhere from the streets to the Union Halls, from the Tenderloin
Theater Festival to the Carnival Against Capitalism at the Democratic
Convention, and from Stanford University to the bathtub at a house
Samsara has performed as part of the May Day festival, the Radical
Festival and the Harmony Sweepstakes A cappella Competition. Samsara has
workshops on ‘Using your voice as resistance’ across the country, from
