Village Harmony is a collaboration of young musicians, ages 13 and up,
based in Vermont This group is dynamic, joyous, and unfailingly musical,
and features an unusual and lively repertoire. They sing from memory with a
powerful, remarkably in tune, straight-toned sound. To watch Village
Harmony is almost as much fun as listening to them. Their informality and
the energy of their close-knit interaction communicates directly to the
audience. These teenagers are serious and passionate and are searching for
music and musical experience which is in some way transcendent.
Although a teenage group, Village Harmony has always featured American
shape-note and early New England singing school music and now, increasingly,
new shape-note style compositions by its members, introducing Village Harmony
participants to the intense fervor of the fasola singing community and
insuring its continuation . At the same time they find equal joy in many
other kinds of music: Balkan village music, early music (primarily
renaissance and early baroque sacred works), South African songs, gospel
and spirituals. In past years Village Harmony has performed on Garrison
Keillor's Prairie Home Companion and also at the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, DC. Each year their spring tour takes them somewhere new where
without fail they are received as one of the most exciting young singing
groups of our time.
The Santa Cruz Shape Note Society will join Village Harmony for several
numbers during the concert.
