Rachmaninoff - Vespers (All Night Vigil)
      March 12, 13 and 14

Sergei Rachmaninoff's Vespers, or All-Night Vigil, is a passionately
spiritual synthesis of the Russian composer's dazzling harmonies and the
traditional Byzantine chants of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Guild
Chorus sings the work unaccompanied, in the original Slavonic.

The Rachmaninoff Vespers has been described as a massive a cappella choral
"symphony" in the incomparably rich Russian Orthodox style—an epic work that
heralded both a new era in Russian sacred music and the debut of a visionary
voice for the composer. Our performances provide a dual offering by also
featuring Elena Sharkova of San Jose State University delivering our
pre-concert lecture. Professor Sharkova was born & raised in St. Petersburg,
Russia, where she received her Masters in choral conducting. An expert on
Russian choral literature, she is a magnetic and knowledgeable speaker full
of interesting information about Rachmaninoff and the Russia of his time.
