I am in South Carolina and I see them frequently at
Lowes and Home Depot, often the Lilac Lights cultivar,
which has canadense blood and seldom works here. The
NOrthern LIghts series of azaleas was developed at the
University of Minnesota aiming for cold hardiness.

Whatever potted azaleas you buy make sure to untangle
a lot of the roots (usually potbound) before planting
in the ground or replanting in a larger pot. Failure
to loosen the root ball is a sure recipe for failure.
I have killed a number of nursery plants, azaleas and
rhododendrons in particular by NOT doing this.

When the Lights series first came out we were able to get some from mail
order Forest Farms in Oregon also, the local chapter's purchase from Briggs
nursery tissue-cultured liners and Holly Hills (now closed).

Orchid Lights is being replace with Lilac Lights.

We lost White Lights and purchased another probably from a Big Box store or
end of season clearance at local garden centers. Because they were bred for
northern gardens with cold hardiness and not summer heat tolerance in mind
they are more popular in these areas.

Western Lights came from an ARS convention. We usually buy small plants but
Apricot Surprise and Northern Hi-Lights came budded up from Home Depot in
        the fall.

Northern Hi-Lights was place in too exposed a location and almost died as it
had way too much peat in the mix and we did not remove enough of it so it
heaved. A testament to its hardiness is that it survived being moved the
        next year and bloomed anyway.

        Link for Forestfarms

        http://www.forestfarm.com

And don't forget Greer Gardens has quite a few.
        http://www.greergardens.com/decidous.htm
Harold must be too busy with shipments to jump in his response.

Don't forget to check your local garden centers. North of me some places
only have the Northern Lights series for sale and Gibraltar.

Sally Perkins, Salem, NH Finally a cool rainy day. R. canadense white form
        and purple are blooming.

              Mike;

               Here is way that you can procure those "Northern Lights" series of Azaleas;

Much as I dislike ordering from a Box Store, sometimes I think you have very few choices, so it goes.

                  1. Contact the Garden Manager of the Home Depot in Joliet ,ill

                  2. Ask them to order for you these Azaleas and thier Product number;

                 3.  '  Apricot Surprise'         H 4907

                      ' NORTHERN LIGHTS   HD 1177

                      ' gOLDEN Lights'          H 8948

                       ' Mandarin Lights'        H 8949

                       '  Orchid Lights '          951018.07

                       '  Rosy Lights '           951018.08

                       '  Spicy Lights'            H 8947

                       '  White Lights'           970118.47

               ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

then contact Song Sparrow Nursery in Avalon,Wisconsin and order these

                      Candy Lights and Lemon Lights.

               ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and you will have about 90% of the Lights that were released to the Nursery trade from the University of Minnesota.

                Missing from that list

Pink Lights---    very tough to Find----   Gerald Firak from the Midwest Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society is the only one in "our" neck of woods that has this plant as far I know----   this year he even "donated"  open pollinated seeds to the ARS sEED eXCHANGE.

TRI-Lights--   Klehm's Song Sparrow used to carry this plant, but I don't see it in his catalog  for this year---   I can of course get you some cuttings from the One that I have growing  in my garden.

Lilac Lights--  - this one is a new one which is a "Imrovement" on Orchid Lights, I think  that Evergreen Nursery In Green Bay,Wisc carrries this one.
              ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

or Mike if you are in a Traveling Mood--  about 500 miles North of you

Tiny town of Buffalo, Minnesota 60 miles west of "Twinkies"  a lady there Erva Hence  has over 1,000 of the original "Northern Lights"  series growing on her rural Farm --  needless to say when they are in bloom, there is a "traffic" jam upon the farm country road.  She used to have those releases for sale.

              --------------------------------------------------------------

              good Luck;

Tadeusz -  Illinois-  Go White Sox- Repeat.

This is my position on the Northern Lights series

                  1) They are very very hardy.

                  2) I always give them a try whenever I can find them.

                  3) However, If you live in an area where you winters are warmer
                  than -20F then

Apricot Surprise is a very nice color yellow and seems to be a good
plant. If I have it long enough it may become my favorite.

NORTHERN LIGHTS seems good especially if you need a white with a
yellow blotch. Sally likes it much more than I do.

GOLDEN Lights is the best in the series as far as I am concerned. A
very interesting muddie pink/orange/yellow flower on a very healthy
                  and easily grown plant.

Mandarin Lights, although still to early to tell, may well be a good
                  orange for southern New Hampshire.

Orchid Lights is as hard to grow as canadense.

Rosy Lights is nothing special. It is an ok pink but Weston has
                  several that are much better.

Spicy Lights is an outstanding color on a plant that gets mildew and
rust. I have never seen one in June or later that did not look
                  diseased.

White Lights is a plant that never seems altogether happy. I just do
not like it as a plant and like it less every time I see one in the
ground. Looks nice at the nursery in a pot.

Western Lights has not been in my yard long enough to have an
opinion. Not really in the series any way.

In summary, I do not know why anyone who can easily grow deciduous
azaleas would go out of their way to find these. Other than
hardiness they are nothing special and none of them are late
bloomers so they bloom when everything else is blooming.

Now, I am not negative on them. I recommend the ones I consider ok
to people who live in New Hampshire and other colder climates. Many
of the nurseries around Concord NH report very good luck with them.

However to me recommending the North Lights series to people who
live in the South is as silly as recommeding the Finnish series of
elepidotes to people who live in Seattle.

I do sometimes recommend the Weston deciduous azaleas to those in
the South because they look very native and most are late bloomers
but I have to admit even this is more than a little suspect.

                    Mike,

I got an azalea at Lowes in Greenwood, SC identified as Northern
Lights Hi-light Azalea (Lowes Plant # L14159) I got it a year ago
last fall and repotted it into a 2 gallon pot with bark, a la Creel.

It came through the winters well set ,a great many buds and bloomed
its head off this spring. It is cream with a yellow blotch. Perhaps
last summer was atypical, but so far I would have to say that it
seems to survive in our heat and humidity.

I am debating whether or not to plant it in my clay soil. I think I
will continue it for a year or two more in a 5 gal pot with super
drainage, since I don't have to worry abouut winter killing the above
                    ground roots.

Then maybe I will try planting it our in amended clay/

Thanks for the credit in repotting advisement, but I
don't deserve it. Now if you had used one of my holey
pots amended with many new 3/4 inch drain holes I
would accept credit. I am pleased and surprised that
a Northern Lights azalea is doing well for you. I
have killed two, maybe more, NL azaleas from Lowes.
But I think the real reason is that I did not take the
time to use a hand cultivar and free up the mass of
roots on the pot-bound plant and repot it in real
azalea media in a fast draining pot. Most, if not
all, large deciduous and evergreen azaleas at chain
stores are greatly pot bound and will die soon if just
stuck into without some major, delicate work on the
                      roots.

Now where can you find a 5 gallon pot with super
drainage? You cannot buy one I know. I was making a
few today with a 3/4 inch holesaw at my new potting
                      bench.

I had a Golden Lights once for a year during which
time it crossed with a nearby austrinum, then died.
I have given away several of the seedlings to folks in
this group, and look forward to bloom reports in a few
                      years.

John, didn't you come to see me once a couple of years
ago. Come back? The Cree-Way laboratory is even more
                      of a circus now.
