Group Description

'Activist Teachers Network' (ATN) seeks to mobilise NSW public school, TAFE and associated teachers at school, district association and NSW state Fed council level, continuing the legacy of POPE (Promotion of Public Education).

Our analysis of global education opposes the local version of the 'New York Model' of mass testing (NAPLAN), devolution, so-called standards based 'accountability' and performance based pay.

Education should be free and enlightened, not measured and miserable !

This includes the credentialled based HAT category, loss of casual and temporary pay progression, and rural school Principal restructuring under the latest 2013 pay deal. This deal saw members forced to vote not with the usual months of consultation and involvement, instead with less than a week's notice.

This arose from the recent years of cowering deference to the NSW Liberal's strangle hold on the IRC and subsequent union activity - from a union which by its high profile, membership and democratic structures, should be leading the charge, aiming to excel the previous highpoint of the September 2011 joint union rally in Sydney's domain as well as towns across NSW.

While the "Gonski" campaign shows some hope of future funding rises, the gains to date have been mixed, with many of the poorest schools losing funds! We should not accept that 'teacher performance' mandated by funding deals overcomes the disadvantage that must be addressed by a full resourcing of need.

We see such solidarity action of rallies and mass centralised meetings as the best way to win on salaries and conditions, and defeat cuts to public education, Medicare and other services. Tony Abbott's Liberal's free market model of private school subsidies and cheap self- credentialling of vocational qualifications by labour hire oufits opposing TAFE is a proven failure, as shown in Victoria.
