Can any of the later, or other model atlas quick change gearboxes be
the 10F to replace the change gears without major surgery?

any 10" Atlas with a 3/4" leadscrew. (A minor hack for the early
ones with the 5/8" leadscrew, you just need a collar.)
You need the complete drive train after the spindle gear, up to the
leadscrew, though. This is good if the change gear train is trashed,
(like mine was after a crash). It broke the reversing gearbox and
the gear bracket the change gears mount to.
The change gear lathes used the reversing box, the QC uses a reversing
tumbler just below the spindle.
Don't get a 12" QC from a lathe with the 1/2" bed ways, that is a totally
different QC, because the headstock is wider and the QC mounts to
the headstock. On the 10" and the old 12" with the 3/8" ways, the
QC bolts to the two vertical holes in the bed where the reversing
gearbox goes. I did this, it was a 30 minute bolt-on conversion.
