Maria, having difficulty adjusting to the christened life of a nun, is sent by the Mother Superior to act as governess to a retired Captain with seven children. He leaves on a trip and Maria quickly changes the children's routine, teaching them to sing and to enjoy life.
The Captain returns with a countess he is intending to marry. At first shocked at the changes in his home he is soon won over by his children`s beautiful singing. He also falls in love with Maria. Torn between her vows and her love for the captain, Maria goes back to the convent. The Mother Superior tells her she must follow her heart. Maria marries the Captain. Meanwhile, Austria is being over-run by the Nazis, and rather than fall under Nazi rule, he and Maria device a scheme to escape during a song festival in which the family participates. The escape is successful.
The musical contains many songs that have become popular throughout the years including The Sound of Music, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, Do-Re-Mi, and Climb Every Mountain.
