I have been rather amiss at publicising my politics beyond the social networks of Facebook and Twitter - and the real world of course - but am sending this email out on an apt day, when £10 million of taxpayers money is being lavished on a widely hated figure's funeral, in a time of austerity. This blog provides a more convenient way to get updates from me than relying on me sending emails, but I will continue to do so from time to time.

Helping move the centre ground of British (and world) politics to the left, in a similar way to Maggie Thatcher moved it to the right.

About Steve Wallis, the Maggie Thatcher of the Left
This is the new blog of Steve Wallis, set up to mark Maggie Thatcher’s death. I was inspired by hearing in the news about how she shifted the centre ground of British politics (to the right) rather than simply accommodating her politics to it. I am a revolutionary socialist and believe that inspiring people with the vision of a better world is far more effective than piecemeal reforms (which tend to be taken back in times of recession anyway).
I use my Facebook account a lot, mainly to post political messages and find out what events are on. I have created pages for a Revolutionary Platform Network and to Launch an international general strike on 1 May against the 1%. I have created an event Mass strikes/demonstrations/civil disobedience on Wednesday 1 May (International Workers Day). I have also created several pages including Very Democratic Socialism (which outlines the sort of socialist society I am in favour of), Bring Down Cameron – millions cannot afford to wait until 2015 and $21 trillion hidden by rich global elite – close all tax havens, loopholes.
      I also have a Twitter account, @socialiststeve.
I am in a band Fruity Frank and the Frisky Freaks, based in Rochdale. The band’s name was inspired by a computer game I wrote for Amstrad and MSX platforms in the mid-1980s (with my brother Sean providing the graphics) called Fruity Frank. There are now emulators available for PCs and Macs – for details visit the Fruity Frank website www.fruityfrank.net. You can also play the band’s songs from our SoundCloud page http://soundcloud.com/fruity-frank.

I've included below text used to publicise the blog on Facebook (my account is www.facebook.com/socialiststephen):

My new blog, ThatcheroftheLeft, which I've got started with my latest Revolutionary Platform News newsletter, my views about Thatcher's demise (really due to mass non-payment of the poll tax rather than the riot or Europe) and details of my song "The New Poll Tax" (Bollywood or Lenny Kravitz style), about the poorest being expected to pay up to 30% of their council tax.

I added a link to a petition calling for no state money to be spent on Thatcher's funeral in this time of austerity, points about a Guardian opinion poll on Thatcher's legacy about the poll tax (including lessons for today on how difficult councils will find it to collect small amounts of council tax), a plug for the internet campaign to get "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" to number 1 (it got to number 2 in the end) and a link to a survey of the SWP, Socialist Party and Counterfire's views on Ken Loach's Left Unity initiative (which already has over 8000 supporters). More recently, I've added an obituary and link to a song remembering environmentalist Gayle O'Donovan and points about the benefit cap and child benefit.
