This morning at about 8:30 AM I found a BLACK-NECKED STILT feeding on the
sand and mudflats near Long Bridge, about 1.5 mile west of Ashland, WI. The
bridge is at the mouth of Fish Creek, about half way between the Lake
Superior Inn and the Highway 13 turn to Washburn/Bayfield.
There is a road on the north side of Hwy 2 that goes to the bridge. Just
before you get to the right turn near the end there is a small berm blocking
motorized traffic from a path near the western shore of Chequamegon Bay.
Take this path northerly to a well used trail toward the water(approximatley
150 yards in, just beyond the 2nd willow that you have to duck under). Take
this path out to the north side of a small island with exposed sand and mud
flats. The bird was last seen at about 1:30 PM by myself and Eric Bruhnke
and his family, and flew from the sand flats to a small point of mud about
100 yards further north.
