      for the comments you could do a "generic" comment that explains what you've been doing with the students so far and paste it in each one. Then if there are any students you do want to comment on add their personal comment below the generic. This is the format I use for my students.

      did the previous teacher leave information about their final grade?
      what are the school/district expectations for the reporting?� beyond that I would skip the comments this term if you don't know the kids well enough to do that authentically.�

      What you could do though is send an introductory letter home to the parents (if you haven't already done so) explaining your excitement for having JUST started with these students and include the "looking forward to getting to know their child better" along with general information about what you are going to be doing in class, etc!� Might ward off some problems of parents wanting to know why no comments before it happens!
