- Does anyone have any suggestions for Chinese projects?
I was thinking about doing a unit with my 6th, 7th and 8th graders
based on China. Thus far I my ideas are leaning towards Beijing Opera
Masks out of clay or plaster with the 8th grade, shadow puppets with
the 7th and kites with the 6th grade.
Searching the internet has lead me on several wide chases for
information. I was hoping to find a video of the shadow puppet plays
but have found nothing. Any ideas from my brilliant peers out there?
Do you have any ideas of oriental lesson plan ideas that might be
better? I am also planning on doing origami with all grades.
Many thanks in advance~

- Did you check IAD? They usually have some good projects.
I've done this with 2nd gr. and 6th gr. - Have them write a haiku
(integrate writing/literature). Teach them simple Chinese brushwork
strokes, using left over watercolors (mix for a dark brown - black
color). Using paper vertically, have them illustrate their haiku with
the brushwork. Add 6-8" wallpaper on top and bottom to give 'scroll'
effect. Add cut bamboo (tomato stakes) to unglued ends of wallpaper as
scroll ends. Display the Haiku next to the art.
