Our high school requires all classes have a final test or project which is worth one marking period- The final project must reflect work done during the entire year and must be substansial. I have designed multi media projects for all 6 classes that I teach, that include parts of past projects which the students have to work out themselves. I give them a list of all the projects and they must include 5 projects from the year. Art 1 does a cardboard stabile. The surfaces are covered with past projects. The they write an explanation of which projects they choose and why. Art 1 students also get a mini or short exam on design and artists studied. This is an open sketchbook exam and it is multiple choice (I can run it through a machine quickly to grade it) The other 5 classes have differnt final projects, but organized in a similiar manner. They do formal critiques instead of the mini exam (this saves me time having to read a stack of critques since higher level classes have smaller enrollment and makes sure that kids completing Art 1 remember the basics so I don't have to repeat it over and over)
