> Subject: [art_education] Need Suggestions for Family Art Night
> I recently took a part time position with a school system that has a once a month family art night. I will help the director organize the monthly event. The purpose is to show parents that art education is important and that it does tie in with other academics. I attended the January event and it is very well organized. The families are assigned to classrooms and a teacher presents a short lesson and then the family does an activity together. Afterwards, they go to the cafeteria for a free pizza dinner. Everything that has to do with the event is paid for by a grant. Would anyone have suggestions on some topics or lessons that would work well. Thirty minutes is alloted for the lesson and activity, not a long time. The parents are allowed to take home the art materials. This school is in a low socioeconomic area.
> The suggested topic for February was the Chinese New Year which would tie in with social studies. Any suggestions for a short lesson? We also list the state standards to go with each lesson.
> Thank you for any and all suggestions!
We just celebrated an art night that might give you some ideas. Each of the stations was set up for families to be able to create art together with a fairly low level of instruction. If, after looking at my blog post about the event,
>just send an email. Since my program is based on TAB pedagogy, I have lots of pieces available related to curriculum and standards. You'll find some of those in my articles section:
>We had a fabulous time. Let me know what details you need if any of our projects pique your interest!
