      K - 5, 600 kids, 2 buildings, 4 days.

      45 minutes a class.

Except the schedule hasn't enough room for all the classes.  So kindergarten only comes for half the year.  Right now I have only AM K in one building, only PM K in the other.

At our local public elementary schools in Bellingham, Washington (and commonly throughout the state of Washington in general), we have NO art specialists, and art is rare in any given classroom, sorry to say. Some classroom teachers tend to do projects that involve art supplies, like making posters or dioramas, but they are more related to social studies or language arts, not true art experiences. In lower elementary grades, there is more of a chance of seeing art than in the upper grades. (I've been on my soapbox for 23 years about getting art into the classrooms and have made a decent dent in the lack thereof, but not enough of a dent for me to give up yet! )

Middle school, our district adds an art teacher, but not all kids have art...they choose between music and art as an elective. The art teacher has an art room but I don't know the rotation schedule.

My schedule is wacky too.. based on rotation. ..have some kids once a week, some twice and that's in the same grade level so the different classes of 4th grade for example, are never on the same lesson.. one class is always eons ahead of the other.  With 1/2 days and forward and backward days, snow days, make-up days, testing and such, it's almost impossible to have a sequential curriculum that makes sense.

All of my kids are supposed to have art at least once a week for 45 minutes.

                Hi,
That sounds confusing for sure, I have 620 students, pre K-7th grades & travel to 3 schools per week.Pre K - 3rd have 30 -35 minutes once a week depending on the school and 40-45 mins for 4th through 7th once per week also depending on the school. While the schedule is once a week..it is exhausting! Linda in Va.

I teach K-6 at a private school. Our school is
different from others in our schedule. Kids don't have
a self-contained classroom, but they rotate to
specialty teachers for each subject. It works out
wonderful because they have special groupings for math
and they are grouped by their ability level rather
than grade level. Each period is 40 minutes long.
(There are double periods of Language Arts/Social
Studies.) Anyways... I see each class K-6 twice per
week for 40 min. For me this is the perfect amount of
time. I think a little bit longer for the older kids
wouldn't be bad, but at the elementary level 40 min.
is perfect for their attention span. The kids also
have study halls a couple times a week where I can
give them work to catch up on. Marcia in WI
