Re: Navajo Sand Painting
- Hi,I did not do sand painting Navajo style but did experiment with a mural using beach sand .I first sieved the sand and got some fine sand and coarse sand separated.I then drew my design on a hard board sheet and stuck a rope ( medium thick) for outlining my deisgn (the rope outline helped to contain the sand ).After getting the rope outline stuck in place I used glue to cover the flat areas of the design and then dropped the coarse sand to enable it to stick to the glue.In some ares where I wanted a more fuller look I dropped the fine sand.Once the sand was dry and I was sure it stuck on the board I used tempera colours to paint the sand................but I found in my next mural that enamel paints gave it a better sheen.I also painted the rope which outlined my design.I have attached an image of my mural .KamlaChennai,India.

- try mixing the sand with powdered tempera paints...it works great and is a wonderful use for those old powered paints we inherited with our job...
