      A programme on Training Approaches and Methods

      ( February 27-29, 2008)

       

      Introduction                                                                                                                      

      As the external environment, and the economy, change, the Development Sector today is also undergoing rapid changes, to cope with these external changes. This in turn requires regular training and re-training of staff of development organisations. Added to this is the greater turnover of staff in development organisations, which means that almost every month new staff need to be appointed and trained. Such training cannot be carried out by external faculty alone, but needs at least a few short programmes in-house, to be conducted often by the senior staff. However, a major challenge is in developing the right skills and approach among the staff, to make training effective. It is important that even if staff themselves do not conduct the training, they need to be aware of relevant methodologies, so that they can assess the effectiveness of the training independently.

       

      Objectives

      The training programme will be conducted to meet the following objectives:

      ·To help CSO senior staff and resource persons learn effective training techniques.

      ·To help in conducting an appropriate training Needs Analysis as a pre-training activity, to ensure that training content is relevant and appropriate.

       

      Pedagogy

      This module has been designed as a participatory programme that would build-upon the experiential knowledge of participants. The methods will use the Adult Learning Cycle as the basis for the training, with interactive group sessions and exercises.

      Course Contents

      The training programme includes the following:

      ·Learning Styles - VARK (Visual, Aural / Auditory, Read/Write, Kinesthetic), Self-assessment

      ·Effective communication as a primary tool for training

      ·Factors affecting training effectiveness - AURA (Attention, Understanding, Retention, Application)

      ·Developing exercises and games for training

      ·Design of training - Training Needs Analysis, setting objectives and detailed design

       

      Programme Outcome

      At the end of the three day programme, the participants are expected to have

       

       ·Developed an awareness of the Adult learning Cycle Approach

      ·Learnt relevant techniques for training using the Adult Learning Cycle

      ·Learnt the process of conducting a Training Needs Analysis on an annual basis

      ·Practised use of the techniques in a training situation

       

      Eligibility

      This programme is designed for Development Professionals from NGOs, academic institutions, CSR Professionals, officers from Central and State governments, and international development organizations who are involved in capacity building and training.

       

      Duration

      3 Days

      The training will be for a period of 3 days which will essentially consist of:

      1. Class room sessions
      2. A guided tour to the development models within TARAgram campus
      3. An evening out to visit the Orchha temples and fort.

       

      Fee

      INR 10,000 per participant for Indian Participants

       

      INR 18,000 (450 USD) for Overseas Participants

      Overseas participants may please send the fees through wire transfer. The details of the wire transfer will be sent to each selected trainee once we get their nomination form.

       

      Venue

      The training will be held in TARAgram, Appropriate Technology Centre, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh. TARAgram is a campus set in the rural environment of Orchha. It is a centre which showcases the Livelihood models developed by DA in the field of appropriate technology, and environment.

      Participants to the training will be provided a guided tour of the campus which will enrich the learnings from the class room sessions.

       

      Tips of getting to TARAgram

      Participants coming by train should take a ticket till Jhansi (UP) Railway station. From there, TARAgram is 9 kms away. There will be a pick up facility based on the information provided on the arrival time.

      Other Useful Tips

      1. The Training fee covers the following:

      • Accommodation
      • Food
      • Course material
      • Leisure trip to the famous Orchha Temples and Fort

      2. The participants can arrive one day before the training date and leave on last day of the training by a train which leaves around 5.45 pm

      3. The participants will be expected to book and reserve their tickets. The training fee does not include the travel expenses.

      4. DA reserves the right to withhold the fee for administrative and other costs for cancellations prior to the start of a course. A suitably qualified replacement may attend the course in place of the registered person. DA also reserves the right to cancel a course if too few participants have registered.

       5. Interested participants who are unable attend this Training on the given dates due to prior engagements can let us know of their interest. We will keep you informed when the same training is conducted again.

      Resource Person

      RAM BHAT

      Mr. Bhat has completed his B. Tech (Hons) from I.I.T., Kharagpur, India. He has been involved in designing and conducting Training for the community as well as the Civil Society Organizations. He has strong workshop moderation and group facilitation skills which makes him impart effective training. His clients in the past years have included UNDP, UNCTAD, WTO and Economic Commission of Africa, African Centre for Women and others. He has been with the development sector for the past 16 years. He has also completed a number of short term courses on different aspects of development, team work and motivation, and has been involved strongly in entrepreneurship development and training of trainers across the country.
