dear Zubair, when persons like those you have listed and thousands of others who struggle day-to-day for justice, equality, peace and harmony, they do not fight as hindus, etc., but as sensitive and aware members of a society and a country which is amazingly diverse and rich in its desire to protect and further this plurality as our common heritage. So don't ask `muslims' what they did or did not do; muslims have always been prominent in our common struggle for freedom, in our communist and socialist movements for equality and in the furthering of our classical and popular culture - can you even imagine these without muslims? So lets be vigilant against those who want to force us into divisive categories and realize that it is `we', the great diversity of all Indians, who can be progressive and egalitarian on the one hand and retrogressive or even fascist on the other. rgds, madhu

They are Hindu politicians, Hindu human right activists, Hindu Police officers, Hindu lawyers, Hindu journalists who are tirelessly fighting for the cause of Muslim community. There are Teesta Setalwad, Sanjiv Bhat, Mukul Sinha, Ashish Khetan, SR Darapuri, Rajiv Yadav and Atul Kumar Anjan. These are a few names I have mentioned, we can find such Hindus in every village and city of India who oppose injustice and who are always ready to fight on behalf of Muslims. Muslims must salute them and be thankful to them.

Christians and Hindus are playing their part by opposing injustice and atrocities meted on Muslims all over the world. Are the Muslims playing their part by protesting against the injustices and atrocities committed on non-Muslims in any part of Muslim world? Did Muslims ever protest against the atrocities on Dalits and Tribals?

        Very well said, Madhu.

Essentializing identity in religious color is what the communalists do. Those who fight against communalism, do so as human beings who believe in justice and democracy. Most, if not all, listed in your, otherwise well-meaning, mail would reject being identified as "Hindus' or, that they are 'fighting for the cause of Muslims'. No, sir. They are fighting for fellow citizens, who happen to be peasants and rickshaw-pullers, office managers and shop-keepers, Hindus and Muslims, atheists and devout.

            Zubair,
You have raised an impartant issue. Had any person of other religion would have written that it would have been a cause of violence. But try going deep into it, why does it happen, things are even worse in muslim majority countries, there is no one to fight for the minorities and even if anyone musters courage s/he is killed or terrorised ... is it because of the religious preachings which considers people of other religions as sub-humans.. and also why muslims world over love violence so much.. I have not written this as hate ..but I really want truthful answers from muslims.. and please dont divert the answer by counting atrocities of other communities around the globe.

It is measure of a society that people stand up against injustice when they see one. There are many Indians who fight against injustice irrespective of their religious beliefs. We must be thankful to all of them for trying to keep India just, peace loving and secular.

The persons refered are protesting against injustice not because they are born in a Hindu family but for their commitment towards domocratic and secular values. Such values can only ensure sustainablity of a healthy democratic system in India, which can only ensure fraternity and peace. In a multi relegious nation like Indian protection of democratic and civil rights is the key to build a truely modern nation.
