MOSCOW, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - The head of the Russian Orthodox Church has been awarded a Russian state prize for his humanitarian work, the Kremlin press service said Friday.
"Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II has been awarded [the state prize] for his educational and peacekeeping work, preserving moral values and ensuring the consolidation of society," the press service said.
President Vladimir Putin will award the prize, which includes 5 million rubles (roughly $185,000), at a Kremlin ceremony June 12, a state holiday to mark Russia becoming an independent country after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The Kremlin said earlier this year that the prize, proposed by the presidential Council on Culture and Art, aimed to consolidate society and highlight the importance the state attaches to society's spiritual development. It will be awarded along with already existing prizes for accomplishments in science, technology, literature, and the arts.
"The prize will be given to prominent figures engaging in intensive humanitarian activities in the interests of certain people and society as a whole," the Kremlin said.
