The Vorstand of the German Society
      Addresses the Stigmata Phenomenon
      in Berlin

      --------------

In the past few weeks and months there has been considerable unrest at
the Berlin Arbeitszentrum ("work center") of the Anthroposophical
Society in Germany. It has resulted from the phenomenon of the
Stigmata of Ms. Judith von Halle, who is employed as a secretary at
the Center as well as from the related efforts of Peter Tradowsky to
emancipate the Center as an independent association from its legal
connection to the national Society. Both Judith von Halle and Peter
Tradowsky together have planned and executed various meetings and
events --- all of them having as theme the various aspects and
      implications of the Stigmatization.

The executive committee [Vorstand] of the Anthroposophical Society in
Germany now deems it an urgent necessity to voice its concern in the
light of these developments. The Spiritual Scientific/Anthroposophical
milieu that is being represented by the above phenomenon must be
regarded as extremely questionable. There is no doubt that this
Stigmata phenomenon is real; but its cause must be considered as
unclear. However, it is clearly perceptible that the intention and the
mode of representing the phenomenon and the "emotionalizing" of its
purported spiritual background in the long run has very disruptive
effects on the Anthroposophical Society, polarizing its members. Such
divisiveness appears, for example, in the clear intention to
disseminate the Anthroposophical meaning of the Stigmata and then to
connect that meaning with progress and development in the Society.

The Vorstand of the Anthroposophical Society in Germany distances
itself from the above designated beliefs, interpretations and
ambitions. From a Michaelic perspective, there is always the danger
that an ancient spirituality shows up, a body-bound rapport with the
spirit that can only be atavistic today. The personal and social
consequences of such a spiritual attitude demonstrate themselves,
among other things, in the formulations of Judith von Halle and in
Peter Tradowsky, who was brought in as a writer to publicize them.
There it is claimed that Christ reveals Himself in the Stigmata event:

". . . nevertheless it is always Christ Himself Who addresses you
totally personally -- in love --, even if you happen to argue with
this Stigmata event, which came to pass within the Anthroposophical
Society, while, by His grace through the guidance and support of your
Karma, He allows you yourselves to become witnesses of His journey
through the Earthly world, witnesses of His authenticity, witnesses of
      His ubiquitous presence."

It cannot be stressed any more strongly what dangers exist in the
dissemination of such beliefs and convictions. Above all consider this
widely publicized letter from Peter Tradowsky and Judith von Halle:

"In this sense, it is essential that we understand the phenomena
produced by the Stigmata not as illness, but as signs of the evolving
future of human health and wellbeing. The Renewed Phantom, the
Resurrection Body, is the Essence of all health-giving forces, of all
healing forces, even childhood forces. It will be that very same Body
that human beings will carry with them beyond the Earth-Evolution
      directly into the Jupiter Existence."

Such an interpretation as expressed above must be considered
problematic, especially, if it is formulated by and for one particular
person and its particular effects. There is the danger that, by such
statements, Anthroposophy, in its outer world effectiveness, will
      become more and more dubious.

      Zum Berliner
      Stigmatisationsphänomen

      Eine Stellungnahme des Vorstands

      Im Arbeitszentrum Berlin der Anthroposophischen
Gesellschaft in Deutschland ist es in
den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten zu
      erheblichen Beunruhigungen gekommen.
Diese ergaben sich aus dem Phänomen der
Stigmatisation von Frau Judith von Halle, der
      Sekretariatsmitarbeiterin des Arbeitszentrums
einerseits, aus den Bestrebungen Peter Tradowskys,
      das Arbeitszentrum als eigenständigen
      Verein aus dem rechtlichen Zusammenhang
      der Landesgesellschaft herauszulösen,
andererseits. Judith von Halle und Peter
      Tradowsky haben gemeinsam verschiedene
      Veranstaltungen geplant und durchgeführt,
die die Folgen und Wirkungen der Stigmatisation
      zum Thema hatten.

      Der Vorstand der Anthroposophischen
Gesellschaft in Deutschland sieht es nun als
      dringend notwendig an, seine Besorgnis
      angesichts dieser Entwicklung zum Ausdruck
zu bringen. Der zur Darstellung gekommene
      geisteswissenschaftlich-anthroposophische
      Hintergrund der bezeichneten Phänomene
kann als durchaus fragwürdig betrachtet werden.
Die Ursache der – fraglos vorhandenen –
      Stigmatisationsphänomene muss als ungeklärt
      gelten. Deutlich wahrnehmbar jedoch
ist, dass die Intention und die Art der Darstellung
      der Phänomene und ihres gemeinten
      spirituellen Hintergrunds emotionalisierende
      und letztlich die Anthroposophische Gesellschaft
      auseinander dividierende Wirkungen
haben. Diese zeigen sich beispielsweise in der
      erkennbaren Intention, die anthroposophische
      Bedeutung der Stigmatisation herauszustellen
und mit der Entwicklung in der Gesellschaft
      zu verbinden.

      Der Vorstand der Anthroposophischen
      Gesellschaft in Deutschland distanziert sich
      von den beschriebenen Überzeugungen,
      Interpretationen und Bestrebungen. In

Gefahren in solchen Überzeugungen (u. a.
von sich selbst) und ihrer Verbreitung liegen.
Außerdem heißt es in dem von Peter Tradowsky
      und Judith von Halle verbreiteten
      Brief:

It's always interesting to me to hear of members who
then use Rudolf Steiner's work to promote their own in
the way of Bondarev and others.

I agree with the comments made by the members of the
German Vorstand, it is problematic when others come
and speak forth such things as 'this is the future
body' etc and use terminology that works soley on our
feelings. That is what this all feels like to me.

If they wish to distance themselves, emancipate the
Center no less, then I do think this calls into
question the true connections of this event to
Anthroposophy as a teaching. And it directly calls
attention to the person as well as the person who is
        supporting this whole endeavor.

I can share personally that I have experienced this
stigmata in another lifetime. The way it is being
discussed now with the whole 'this is the future life
body, the no eating etc. really speaks of something
Christ speaks of in the Bible: 'do not show your face
when you are fasting to gain nobility or to call
attention to yourself from others'. Do the work.

Today's time is that we do the deed. We do the Christ
deed of forebearing our people through these tumultous
times. We can speak of encountering the Christ as an
everyday event whose affect has been that we work the
streets with no worry for ourselves. It doesn't divide
        naturally by itself.

I can respect Ms. von Halle as its her lifetimes
experience. It is how she handles it that will make
the difference for her and also for others. May she
find a way to bring herself fully into this
incarnation without being misled by others. May she
find a way to eat and not die a young death as has
happened with most of those of the past, including
myself. We need all we can get.

        All good things,
        Dottie
