Buffy and Giles are together, having worked through things by using
lyrics back and forth to each other. Now that they're together, how
will the gang handle it and, more specifically, what will they do
about an obsessed Spike?

Angel had returned to Los Angeles within the week, rejoining Wesley
and Cordelia at the Hyperion Hotel.
Buffy and the others had settled into a routine that always included
having someone with Buffy at night. Having used groups of vampires
to attack first Giles and then the Slayer, no one trusted Spike to
play fair.
Tonight, like most other nights, Buffy was in the audience at the
Cellar, listening to her husband play.
Dark side coming now nothing is real
She'll never know just how I feel
From out of the shadows she walks like a dream
Makes me feel crazy, make me feel so mean
Nothing gonna save me from a love that's blind
Slip to the dark side and cross that line
On the dark side, oh yeah, on the dark side
Oh yeah
Dark side coming now nothing is real
she'll never know just how I feel
from out of the shadows she walks like a dream
makes me feel crazy, make me feel so mean
nothing gonna save me from a love that's blind
slip to the dark side and cross that line
on the dark side, oh yeah, on the dark side
oh yeah
nothing gonna save me from a love that's blind
slip to the dark side and cross that line
on the dark side, oh yeah, on the dark side
oh yeah
on the dark side, oh yeah, on the dark side
oh yeah
(Darkside, John Cafferty)
Buffy smiled as Willow and Tara held hands and Willow leaned her
head on Tara's shoulder. Xander and Anya were working on inventory
at the shop and Dawn was spending the night with one of her school
friends.
Willow and Tara watched Buffy and smiled to each other. If only they
could keep Spike out of Buffy and Giles' lives, they believed things
might actually work out.
Giles, onstage, spotted his wife and other Scooby members and
grinned as he and the other musicians slipped into their next number.
Got the heat turned on and the windows down
She's hell on wheels, telling everyone how good it feels
My teethy she-wolf, knocking on my door
She wants to roam the road just to get down on the floor
She said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
She said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
Steering with her knees, she's got both hands free
Using the cruise control, you know, reaching over she likes to tease
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
just use your body, don't need to hitch-hike
when you ride with me, little boy, take it any way you like
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
creatures and swerves, screwing up my nerves, start flying across
the seat
pulling me close at every curve
just use your body, she says, don't hitch hike
when you ride with me, little boy, take it any way you like
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up, little boy, and ride
she said let's ride, rev it up, rev it up little boy and ride
she said ride
(Rev it Up, Casual Gods)
Willow and Tara giggled as Buffy began blushing. Giles grinned and
lifted his sunglasses for Buffy to see his eyes and impish light in
them. She blushed an even deeper red but nodded.
Buffy had just begun trusting herself and Giles sexually again and
the playfulness was exciting the Slayer.
Buffy's blush turned into a look of confusion as the other band
members pulled back, Tim leaning against some of the amps as he
pulled his guitar strap off from around his neck. Slayer and
friends watched as Giles retrieved an acoustic guitar from the side
of the stage and returned to the mike.
"Most of you regulars know I'm taken, actually went and got
married," Ripper began explaining. Good natured groans greeted the
news of the handsome older guitar player was "off" the
market. "This one is for the woman who keeps me going and gives me
hope."
If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do is to save everyday till
eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
If I could make days last forever, if words could make wishes come
true
I'd save everyday like a treasure then, again, I would spend them
with you
But there never seems to be enough time to do the things
You want to do once you find them
I've looked around enough to know that you're the one I want to go
through time with
If I had a box just for wishes and dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty except for the memory of how
They were answered by you
But there never seems to be enough time to do the things
You want to do once you find them
I've looked around enough to know that you're the one I want to go
through time with
(Time in a Bottle, Jim Croce)
Willow and Tara melted to the back of the club as Buffy lost focus
of everything except her husband and the sweet music coming from his
guitar and lips. They waited patiently as the band finished it's
last set and made their way to the backstage area with the Slayer.
Buffy dashed into Giles' arms as he laughed and lifted her off her
feet. "I love you, you nutcase!"
"I love you, Buffy Summers," Giles answered, kissing her lightly.
"Buffy Summers-Giles!" she corrected, wrapping her legs around him.
"You two are hopeless!" Willow complained but with a laugh.
"Total agreement!" Buffy giggled and put her feet back on the
floor. "Late dinner? Banana split and take the whipped cream home?"
"Buffy!" Willow squeaked in mock terror as Tara blushed next to her.
"You all go ahead, we've got to go over the set were doing for the
party tomorrow night," Giles smiled, hugging Buffy from behind as
she turned to look at her friends.
"You'll be okay?" Buffy asked, turning in his arms.
"I'll be fine, luv," Giles said softly. "I'll have Tim drive me
home."
"Just be careful," Buffy insisted.
"No worries," Giles smiled and kissed her gently. "Go on, I'll be
along in about an hour."
"I'll have the whipped cream waiting," Buffy whispered loud enough
for Willow and Tara to hear as well.
Giles blushed and Ripper growled, biting her neck and laughing when
Buffy squealed and dashed out of his arms.

The small band tore through the music set easily. With Ripper back
fronting the band, they were beginning to get noticed beyond
Sunnydale and they were extremely happy with the way things were
going. Steady job at the Cellar, a front man who could sing instead
of just growling or shouting lyrics and none of the others had seen
such guitar playing outside of well known rock stars or classical
maestros.
Blackness, fills the sight I see,
Destruction, malignancy.
Intense pain, ripping through my veins,
Try so hard but this enemy remains.
Demonic passion, you can't dismiss,
Bleak depression, you reminisce.
Enforce the grip, on your life,
Try to remove it, with a knife.
Face your dark enemy.
Face your dark enemy.
Infestation, you can't see,
Realisation is yet to be.
Infection, pumping through,
They don't know, haven't got a clue.
Remember what it was like before.
It grabbed you, blacked out all you saw.
Conspiracy, inside your head,
Until you think you're already dead.
Face your...
The pressure's on, time ticks away,
Immobilized, you try to delay.
Memories gone, you're unaware.
Your will to live replaced by despair,
Screams of pain you emanate.
Have no faith you're full of hate.
Helpless now, so full of fear,
No point in this, your end is here.
Face your...
(Dark Enemy, Xentrix)
Figures moved through the club, hidden in the shadows of the closed
bar. The only lights still blazing were those on the band as they
practiced.
Spike's eyes narrowed as he listened to the lyrics, wondering when
the hell the old Watcher ever got around to punk rock and black
metal.
Overkill enough is enough
There's nothing left of me to devour
You've had your fill I'm all I have left
What can stop your hunger for power
'cos you took advantage of things that I said
Now the feeling is dead
And that's the ultimate sin
And that's the ultimate sin
Anyway I look at it now
The doors are closed and cannot be opened
Bury your anger and bury your dead
Or you'll be left with nothing and no one
There's no point in screaming 'cos you won't be heard
Now that tables have turned
It was the ultimate sin
It was the ultimate sin
It was the ultimate sin
I warned you then and I'm warning you now
If you mess with me you're playing with fire
Winds of change that are fanning the flames
Will carry you to your funeral pyre
It's pulling you down
It's your final descent
It's too late to repent
When it's the ultimate sin
When it's the ultimate sin
When it's the ultimate sin
When it's the ultimate sin
(Ultimate Sin, Ozzy Osbourne)
The vampire frowned and motioned for the others to hold back as the
band began putting away their instruments and Giles hovered over his
guitar, apparently working over some difficult chords.
"You sure you want to have Buffy come get you, Rip?" Tim asked as he
hefted his bass into the case.
"No worries, I'll stay inside until she gets here," Ripper smiled
and winced at a bad note. "Bloody hell."
"Give it a rest, Ripper," Tim laughed at the older man. "Like
anyone would notice you missing a chord. Why the hell didn't you get
anywhere as a kid? You're as talented as some of the other old
goats."
"Careful, pup!" Ripper laughed. "I can play circles around you."
"Any day of the year," Tim agreed and began following the other band
members towards the back door.
Giles worked a bit longer on the chords and then glanced up and then
back at this guitar fingering. "Going to spend the night in the
shadows just watching or are you actually going to face me, Spike?"
The vampire was startled and tried to cover it by snarling as he
stepped into the dim light on the club floor, working his way around
the tables and chairs.
"Feeling cocky, are we?" Spike tried to taunt. "That what the songs
for?"
"Lyrics seemed appropriate," Giles shrugged, still working on his
chords. "Sending lyrics back and forth seemed to work with Buffy
and myself. Got her into my bed and married, isn't that what brasses
you off?"
Spike's hands clenched into fists and he "vamped" out into full
vampire visage. "Don't get too cocky there, mate! I may not be able
to touch you but I've got friends who can, remember?"
"Oh yeah, I remember them beating me nearly to death, biting me and
then crushing my hand as you laughed," Ripper's eyes narrowed. Even
though he spoke softly Spike knew the Watcher was enraged. "I also
remember holding Buffy every night as she screamed in terror,
remembering the pain you put her through."
"Pain? Is that what she told you?" Spike laughed. "Hell, old man,
she enjoyed it! Just like she always does with me. Had to save face
and explain away the wild sex and tatt, huh?"
Ripper fought to control his emotions as his eyes darted around,
watching for Spike's band of vampires. "I know you're nothing to
Buffy but a disgusting lap dog that can't even get his own blood
without paying for it."
Spike started to launch himself across the shortened space to the
Watcher and fell back against a table and chairs, knocking
everything and himself over.
Two vampires stepped out into the light, obviously alarmed. Their
enraged faces turned to one of confusion as Giles continued working
on his chords, merely glancing at them.
"Spike?" one of them questioned softly as the fallen vampire crawled
his way back to his feet.
"Kill him!" Spike shouted.
Giles stood up and turned his guitar around, revealing a large
inlaid cross of gold plate on the back of his guitar. The two
vampires pulled back instinctively, especially when he pulled out a
sawed off shotgun from his guitar case. "Special loads, combination
of wood pellets and silver. Good for vampires and werewolves."
The two vampires backed away slowly.
"Guns? Watchers and Slayers don't resort to guns, against the rules,
isn't it?" Spike had a surprising smirk on his face.
"Vampires don't resort to rape usually either, you bastard," Ripper
growled back.
"Do it!" Spike shouted and one of the vampires pulled out a pistol
as Giles fired the shotgun, sending the other vampire flying with
massive wounds to his chest.
The vampire with the pistol fired five times, hitting Giles in the
chest three times.
Spike cheered as the Watcher was knocked back several feet, landing
on the stage hard and didn't move.
The vampire with the pistol turned to his friend, seeing the vampire
spitting up blood and trying to hold his chest together from the
wooden pellets unnerved him. Joshua, the vampire gunman, shrieked
as Victor turned to dust. A moment later Joshua was dashing out the
door, no longer wanting any part of Spike's plans.
Spike barely noticed Joshua and Victor's absence as he slowly
approached the stage and leapt up on it. Giles wasn't moving.
"Didn't think I'd try for you again, did you?" Spike grumbled,
kicking Giles' guitar aside as he approached the Watcher. "Thought
I'd go for Buffy. Decided to take you out of the picture
permanently. I'll deal with her later."
The vampire frowned and cocked his head slightly as he stood over
Giles. He knew something was wrong but couldn't quite figure it out
in the first few moments.
"Why not now, dead-guy?"
Spike spun around with a snarl, surprised to find Buffy standing at
the edge of the stage. A calm Slayer and that didn't make sense
either. He spun around and began panting in surprise and growing
fear as Giles sat up.
There were three bullet holes in his shirt but no blood and he
appeared to be fairly healthy.
"We thought since we weren't playing fair that we shouldn't expect
you to play fair either," Giles smirked as he pulled his shirt open
to reveal a bullet-proof vest. "Bloody things do hurt! I think you
cracked a rib."
Spike turned to face Buffy with a smirk. "No way you can take me,
Buffy. I've bagged two Slayers and screwed the third. Now I'll just
add you to the list of the dead."
"I don't have to take you," Buffy said softly. "Just facing you was
enough. Giles is right, you're nothing to me, Spike. Not even a
threat. I'm not afraid of you anymore."
"You should be! Remember, I can hurt you!" Spike shouted.
"Hey, Spike, remember me?"
The vampire turned in time to barely see Giles' fist just before it
crashed into his nose, straight on. The vampire howled as he was
knocked off the stage holding the broken nose.
"That's my wife you tortured and raped, Spike," Ripper growled as he
jumped off the stage and kicked Spike in the stomach. Knowing the
vampire couldn't fight back made it ethically a fine line but after
what had happened to Buffy, Ripper didn't care about ethics and
Giles wasn't complaining.
He kicked Spike in the jaw, sending the vampire rolling over several
times into another set of chairs and table. Spike's eyes
desperately sought out Buffy's as if asking for help but the Slayer
watched indifferently.
"My child, you bastard!" Ripper shouted, stomping his booted foot
down on Spike's hand. The vampire howled in pain as bones crunched
under Giles' boot. "I expect to get bashed, damnit! But you took my
wife and hurt her and killed my child!" Ripper sent his boot into
Spike's jaw again, the vampire's hair starting to show flecks of red
from the blood flying with each blow. The Watcher lost awareness as
he continued to pound on the vampire, seeing nothing but a shattered
Buffy in his mind.
Spike whimpered and tried to crawl under the table. Ripper grabbed
a boot and pulled the vampire back into the dim light. Spike
stopped struggling as a stake hovered over his heart.
Ripper's eyes held no mercy, only rage.
"Go ahead, you only got this far because of the damned chip in my
head!" Spike snapped.
Ripper felt a gentle touch on his shoulder. "It's enough, Ru,"
Buffy said softly.
Ripper pulled back and tossed the stake to Buffy. "Your choice,
luv. Your fight. Either kill him tonight or live in fear and we
never move on."
The Watcher's face softened and he stood up and kissed Buffy's
forehead.
"I love you and I'll stand by any decision you make. If he's too
pathetic a loser for you to kill, I'll accept that," Giles said
softly, keeping an eye on Spike as he attempted to sit up.
"I'll be out in a few minutes," Buffy said softly, gripping the
stake firmly.
Knowing Spike could hurt or even kill Buffy made Giles nervous but
he knew the vampire was right. Giles shouldn't be the one to kill
him, it had to be Buffy or Angel.
Giles picked up his guitar and headed for the door, saying a small
prayer as he went.

Buffy found Giles waiting by the jeep, strumming his acoustic guitar
patiently. The obvious tension in his face eased when he saw her
and Buffy knew he had been worried.
"You alright, luv?"
"I am now," the Slayer answered, softly kissing his lips. "He's
dust."
Giles nodded, sighing with relief. It had been twenty minutes since
he had left his wife to face her fears and a deadly vampire. An
awfully long time for a battle with a vampire, Giles knew.
He could tell she had been through a fight though, ripped clothes,
bloody lips, a black eye and scraped knuckles.
"You alright with that?" he asked, still worried that the specter of
Spike would haunt them forever.
"Yeah, I hesitated," Buffy admitted. "Part of it was the fear he'd
hurt me again or you. I think he's something like you would have
been if you were turned."
"Ripper without ethics, morals or feelings other than obsession?"
Giles asked, his voice soft.
"Something like that," Buffy nodded. After a few moments she smiled
and kissed his forehead. "Play something for me and then take me
home and make love to me, husband. We've a family to work on."
Giles smiled and crawled into the passenger side of the jeep and
began playing as Buffy started the vehicle.
Don't ask me
What you know is true
Don't have to tell you
I love your precious heart
I
I was standing
You were there
Two worlds collided
And they could never tear us apart
We could live
For a thousand years
But if I hurt you
I'd make wine from your tears
I told you
That we could fly
'Cause we all have wings
But some of us don't know why
I
I was standing
You were there
Two worlds collided
And they could never ever tear us apart
