DALLAS -- An abused cat died Tuesday after a vicious attack that the Greater Dallas Humane Society calls the worst act of animal cruelty it has ever seen.

Young children found the cat Monday morning outside a portable classroom building at Truett Elementary School.

The 3-year-old cat's face and paws were severely burned.

"We think he probably got thrown into the fire somehow because most of his injuries are facial, oral and on his front legs," said veterinarian Dr. Michelle Loftus.

The cat was found near a can of lighter fluid and zip ties apparently used to tie him up.

"This cat was out on the street," said Marty McManus of the Greater Dallas Humane Society. "They purposely picked him up, did a lot of injury to the cat for the gratification of the person. I'm not sure what that is, but it's wrong. It's sad."

X-rays showed internal damage, too, with the cat's heart elevated by air in his chest.

The attacker or attackers also cut off the cat's tail.

Investigators said the attacker may brag about having the tail and may also have been bitten or scratched.

DALLAS -- The abused cat affectionately known as "Tiger" that died Tuesday following a vicious attack was not a stray, NBC 5 reported.

However, the unidentified owner was reportedly too upset to talk about the incident, NBC 5 reported.

The National Humane Society is now offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the person or people responsible for burning and beating the cat Monday, and cutting off its tail.

"Someone who did this is probably bragging, saying, 'Look, I've got a cat's tail,'" Humane Society representative Marty McManus said.

Young children found the cat Monday morning outside a portable classroom building at Truett Elementary School.

"The principal has been here for four years. He says this has never happened on the campus or in the area since he's been here," Dallas Independent School District spokesman Donny Claxton said.

Counselors are now on hand at the school for students who might be upset by the incident.

Meanwhile, investigators are working with school staff in hopes of finding clues.

The Greater Dallas Humane Society calls the cat's death the worst act of animal cruelty it has ever seen.

Animal cruelty is a felony in Texas, punishable by up to 2 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
