Ocmulgee National Monument 75th Anniversary
Ocmulgee National Monument will be commemorating the park's 75th anniversary of becoming a National Monument on December 23, 2011. President Frankiln D. Roosevelt established Ocmulgee National Monument by Presidential Proclamation on December 23, 1936. On June 14, 1934, Congress authorized the establishment of Ocmulgee National Monument comprising of 2,000 acres. However, the government stated that the United States shall not purchase any land but such land shall be secured by the United States only by public or private donation. By December 1936, the land required was 678.48 acres 1,322 less than the bill passed for in 1934. Today, the park consist of 702 acres. Events for the anniversary will be posted at a later date.
