Monk's Mound is outstanding, but don't overhype it
"Any of those sites could produce monumental discoveries, Lankford feels. Monks Mound at Cahokia (near Collinsville, Ill., just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis) is so large it could contain three of the Great Pyramids in it," Lankford said. "Everything we understand could be overturned by the next shovelful of dirt at Cahokia." Monks Mound covers 14 acres at its base and is almost 100 feet tall."I've been to Monk's Mound and walked to the top of it. NO WAY could it contain "three of the Great Pyramids in it." Monk's Mound has about the same base area , but is only about 1/5 as tall as the Great Pyramid at Giza (30 meters vs. 146 meters).
