Group Description

Welcome to a club for the discussion of the life and thought of American poet Walt Whitman. This group is dedicated to reading and discussion of the poetry and life of Walter Whitman, American poet, journalist and essayist, most famous for his verse collection Leaves of Grass.

Born in Long Island, New York, the son of a Quaker carpenter, Whitman was inspired by such diverse sources as Nature, Goethe, Hegel, Carlyle and Transcendentalists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. He worked as a carpenter, teacher, journeyman printer and journalist. During the American Civil War Whitman worked as a clerk in Washington, D.C. and a nurse after his brother was wounded in combat. Walt Whitman died on March 26, 1892, in Camden, New Jersey.
