Group Description

AMBER FOREVER is a Group for people who want to discuss AMBER—the age-old material for beadmaking and many other ornaments, and that provides science with a window into the past. The emphasis will be upon amber beads and jewelry, but will encompass any aspect of amber study—including the interesting if frustrating topic of amber imitations and substitutes. Whether you are an amber collector, an entomologist, or paleobiologist, this is a Group that welcomes your participation.

Our current main-page photographs show a prayer strand from Lebanon, said to have been made in Egypt. The amber has been heat-treated and dyed—so it has "inclusions" that are green and red. Supposedly, the amber is crackled, injected or infused with dyes, and then is heat-treated again to close the cracks. (I'm not certain this is true, but it doesn't seem unreasonable.) I'm told that multi-colored amber of this type can cost around $1,000. or more—due to its popularity.
