Group Description

AMBER FOREVER is a Group for people who want to discuss AMBER—the age-old material for beadmaking and many other ornaments, and that provides science with a window into the past. The emphasis will be upon amber beads and jewelry, but will encompass any aspect of amber study—including the interesting if frustrating topic of amber imitations and substitutes. Whether you are an amber collector, an entomologist, or paleobiologist, this is a Group that welcomes your participation.

Our current main-page specimen is a large piece of natural copal from Madagascar, purchased in 2012 at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. People are often very curious to know how true copal looks, and how it compares to actual amber. This piece is impressive, because the cloudy areas strongly resemble Baltic amber--this amber being famous for diaphaneities that vary from very transparent to fairly opaque, light to dark, and being both transparent and cloudy, mixed together. This is a quality that is more unusual among ambers from other sources.
