      Tell a lie on the Internet and it never dies. Since it's August, there is a new version of the close approach of Mars hoax making the rounds. This one not only claims that on August 27 Mars will be the nearest to Earth that it has been in 60,000 years, and Mars will appear as large as the full Moon, but Mars and the full Moon will be side by side in the night sky!

      It doesn't take but a few seconds to see that Mars is nowhere near a close approach at this time, and the full Moon is on August 20, not August 27. Even during the close approach in 2003, Mars was 1/75 the size of the Moon.
