THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
"King of the Hill: Confrontations"
Previously in Amazing Spider-Man: After a day of relaxation with his
family, Peter finds himself embroiled in a new adventure. Richard
Fisk, better known as the masked criminal the Rose, entered into an
agreement with Liz Osborn. The agreement was that she would not
reveal his true identity and he would provide information to Ben
Urich about the Mafia Syndicate. Ben and Peter come to the offices of
OsCorp to the get info, but find themselves embroiled in a battle as
Hobgoblin shows up. Crimemaster found out what Rose was up to and
sent Hobgoblin over to finish him off. Peter used the confusion to
change to Spider-Man and confront his nemesis. Meanwhile, Mary Jane
has accepted a job with a new modeling agency named O. She arrives at
their offices to be greeted by Daniel Kingsley.
In an Unknown Location In Manhattan:
Chameleon comes here a lot lately although he can't say why. He eyes
the Osborn journal once more and tries to remember why he is so
obsessed with its contents. Although the contents of the journal
seemed to cure his physical ailment, it seems that since finding it
his mental status could be questioned.
"Why do I have so many lapses in my memory?" Chameleon wonders. He
picks up the book once more looks at it then puts it in his safe.
Suddenly, a change comes over his white face as he smiles calmly. A
voice in his head says, "You know why. It will provide you the
revenge we both deserve."
Chameleon nods to himself and smiles as he lays his hand on a black
mask. He puts the mask in his briefcase. He takes the briefcase and
heads for the door. As he does, his stark white face begins to
change. By the time he reaches the door, his face is now flesh
colored framed with reddish-brown hair. Two blue eyes look coldly at
the door and he begins to laugh maniacally.
The Main Offices of O:
Mary Jane Parker can't believe the opportunity she has been given.
The only problem is to take the opportunity means that she will be
working with a man who has acted very strange and mysterious in the
"But, I love modeling," she thinks to herself, "and this is the
biggest agency around. So of course I said yes."
"Are you ready?" Daniel Kingsley asks.
"Yes," she replies.
Daniel smiles and suggests, "Then let's go meet Reynald. He's a
really talented photographer."
Daniel Kingsley leads the way. Mary Jane eyes him as she follows.
Daniel is the spitting image of his creepy twin brother, Roderick.
But, his face is softer and less cruel. She wonders how he is holding
up after his brother's death.(2)
The two enter a large studio with cameras and lights hanging all
about. Daniel walks up to a young man with dark hair and brooding
features. He speaks to him for a moment and then leads him over to
where Mary Jane is standing.
"Reynald, this is Mary Jane Parker. Mary Jane this is your
photographer, Reynald," Daniel introduces.
"Nice to meet you, Reynald," Mary Jane responds.
"Oh the pleasure is all mine. You are an exquisite creature. I will
be honored to capture your beauty on my lens," Reynald says smoothly.
Daniel grins and states, "Well, I am glad this is going so well. Mary
Jane if you would like to get to work then go over there to wardrobe
and we can get started."
"I would love to, Daniel," Mary Jane replies and heads to wardrobe.
Kingsley frowns a little as he turns away. He is not sure he likes
this at all. Mary Jane seems like a nice person and why his boss
wants her involved in a vendetta is beyond him. "Oh well," he
thinks, "I have to do what I am told."
OsCorp Main Building Outer Office:
Spider-Man has spent the last ten minutes listening to Hobgoblin's
prattle and dodging his razor bats. He thinks to himself, "Is this
really what I sound like. I would like to think my puns are better
than the ravings of a lunatic.
Hobgoblin spies that the wall-crawler is momentarily lost in reverie
and hurls a pumpkin bomb at him. At the last second, Spider-Man's
warning sense buzzes crazily in his head and allows him to dodge the
brunt of the explosion.
"That's it Hobby time to take away your toys," Spider-Man quips as he
fires a web-line that attaches itself to the pouch at Hobgoblin's
Spider-Man gives a quick jerk and the strap gives way and the bag
flies towards the wall-crawler. As he waits to get a hold of the
pouch, Hobgoblin uses the momentary distraction to fire the electro-
beams at his opponent.
Spider-Man senses the beams and reacts instinctively. In one fluid
motion, he chucks the pouch with Hobgoblin's weapons in the path of
the beam and leaps out the doorway. The beams strike the pouch and an
explosion ensues. The wall-crawler is covered with rubble. Hobgoblin
surveys the debris for signs of life.
"Well, I guess that is the last of that pesky arachnid. Now to find
Rose and do the same to him," Hobgoblin cackles. He veers the glider
for the hole he had made in the ceiling previously and jets out of it.
Liz Osborn and Ben Urich watch as the masked maniac known as
Hobgoblin heads away from the building on his glider. They look at
each other and wonder what is going on inside. Liz scans the crowd
for Rose, but as she expects he is long gone.
"Do you see him?" Ben inquires.
"Who?" replies Liz distractedly.
"Rose," Ben answers simply.
"No. He is long gone by now," she says.
"Well at least I have this," Ben states indicating the disk, which
Rose provided him. He smiles in anticipation of the scoop of the
year. "I am sorry Ms. Osborn but I must go verify this disk's
"I understand, Mr. Urich," she replies. "Good luck with the story."
Ben rushes off to hail a cab imagining the wealth of information that
could be contained on the disk. Not for the first time he wonders
what happened to Peter. "Oh well, that guy has a knack for getting
into and out of trouble. I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't at the
Bugle by the time I get there."
Liz watches for a few moments and decides this company is still mine
for the moment and I am going to see what is going on.
Back Inside the Office of OsCorp:
There is only silence for a moment as the fire department workers and
police officers slowly enter the room. Then there is the sound of
rubble moving and they all stop for fear that it is the ceiling
Finally, their eyes are drawn to a pile of debris that slowly slides
off of a figure in red and blue. Spider-Man frees him self from the
last of the wall plaster and stands shakily. Liz rushes in and
immediately goes to him. He gladly takes her support and they head to
He shakes his head to clear the cobwebs. Then Spider-Man
inquires, "Is everyone ok?"
Liz answers quickly, "Everyone except for Peter Parker. We got
separated and I don't know what happened to him.(3)"
The wall-crawler grins under his mask and thinks, "If you only knew."
Spider-Man says out loud, "Don't worry about him. I got him to
safety. What about Urich, Rose, and Hobgoblin?"
Liz replies, "Well, Hobgoblin flew off in that direction. Rose
slipped away in the crowd and Mr. Urich went back to the Bugle to
take a look at that disk."
Spider-Man stands and leans for a moment and then collects
himself. "Well, I better get going and track down that maniac."
"Be careful, Spider-Man," Liz warns.
"I will," the web-spinner replies as he fires a web-line through the
hole in the ceiling and swings out into the open air of Manhattan. He
thinks to himself, "I think I can just beat Ben back. Then maybe we
can find out who is behind this whole mess."
Multivex Main Office:
A man in a black mask and black suit sits behind the desk. He has
received reports that his new model is enjoying her job. He wonders
how much longer that will be true. A special phone rings and he picks
it up. "Yes," he answers.
"Rose escaped but I don't think he had time to provide them with any
info," the cackling voice on the other side of the line reports.
"Well, I don't pay you to think, Goblin," taunts Crimemaster. "I have
good information that what the Rose did was provide Mr. Urich, of the
Daily Bugle, with a gift."
"A gift," the voice ponders.
"Yes, a small diskette with all the information Mr. Urich will need
to shed some uncomfortable light on our operation. I want that light
put out before it can even begin to shine," Crimemaster orders.
"On my way, oh brilliant one," the voice jokes and there is a click
on the line.
Crimemaster cringes thinking of Hobgoblin and then smiles. "I will
enjoy ending his employment once his usefulness is used up."
The Daily Bugle Building in Midtown Manhattan:
Spider-Man lands on the side of the building and finds an empty room.
He climbs in the window and quickly changes into the street clothes
he had left bundled here. He emerges from the room as his normal
identity of Peter Parker.
Peter heads straight for the desk of Ben Urich. About five minutes
later, Ben walks up to his desk and sees Peter there. "Just as I
thought," Ben grins, "I wish I had your luck Mr. Parker."
"Well, we can't all marry supermodels," Peter jokes. "Seriously, Ben
let's see what is on that disk."
"OK," Ben replies.
The grizzled reporter sits in his chair and slides the disk into his
hard drive. He tries to bring up the information but just gets a
bunch of computer code. "Damn," he exclaims.
"What is it?" Peter asks not recognizing it at first.
"The information is encrypted. Unfortunately, the decryption
protocols in the Daily Bugle's system can't decipher it," Ben laments.
"So how are we going to get to the information?" Peter inquires.
"Well," Ben Urich begins as he looks around mischievously, "I have a
friend who just happens to have been able to get me a device for
decrypting that isn't exactly legal. It is on my home computer and
would tear through this in minutes."
"Then let's go there and take a look," Peter exclaims!
"I am as anxious as you, Peter. But, I have some things to verify
first. So how about you meet me at my place at 8:30 tonight," Ben
"Will do," Peter replies.
Suddenly, he starts to cough as the acrid smoke of a cigar fills his
nose. Peter stands and turns to meet the gaze of J. Jonah Jameson,
the publisher of the Daily Bugle. "I'm not interrupting your little
tea party am I boys."
"No J.J.," Peter replies.
"Good," the gruff man says. "I would hate to think that I caused work
to interfere with your secret meetings."
Ben Urich stands up and replies, "Jonah, Peter and I are working on a
story that will knock your socks off."
Jonah looks at them both and points his cigar at Ben stating, "It
better or you can be certain that what I will do will knock yours
off." With that, he stomps off to find his next victim.
Peter chuckles, "Well, `Stormin'' Jonah is off to ambush someone
else. I will see you later tonight, Ben."
Back at the Multivex Complex:
Crimemaster sits and watches the screens before him. He thinks how
soon he will have an empire and revenge on the one man who has caused
such misery to him. He clicks a remote on a screen that has a big
view of Spider-Man and grimaces.
He then goes taut as he listens for a slight sound behind him.
Instinctively, he slides to the floor and a second later a bullet
punches its way through the chair he was just sitting in.
Rose steps into clear view and fires several more shots at the wall
of screens behind Crimemaster. "Come on out. It is time this ends. I
know of all your schemes, Crimemaster. You know I did learn a few
things as the son of the Kingpin.(4) One of the things I learned was
to keep close tabs on your allies and your eNow all the information I
have is about to be plastered all over the paper."
"I don't think so, Fisk," Crimemaster calls out.
Crimemaster flips a switch and a bank of bright lights comes on
shining directly at Rose. The man in the purple mask is blinded for a
moment. That moment is all Crimemaster needs. He is on the Rose and
pounding away with his fists.
Rose is able to use a judo flip to extricate him from the
predicament. He thinks to himself, "I did not expect him to be so
strong. I can match that kind of power. Luckily I brought an
Crimemaster lunges at Rose, but at the last second he connects with
something that sends a huge electrical shock through his body.
Crimemaster falls backwards in a heap and spies the weapon Rose is
Richard Fisk held a cane with a jeweled head much like the one his
father used to use to discipline those who dared defy him.
Rose grins and states, "A little souvenir from the time with my
father. I modified it into a stun prod."
Rose retrieves his gun and stands over Crimemaster. He pulls the
trigger but his shot goes wild as Crimemaster uses his legs to take
Rose's feet out from under him. Rose hits the floor hard and gasps
Crimemaster regains his feet and laughs. "You truly don't realize who
you are messing with Fisk and that is why you will lose," Crimemaster
Crimemaster grabs the cane and crushes the jeweled top causing sparks
to fly. Then he breaks the cane in half and drops it on the prone
form of the Rose. Crimemaster rips the purple mask from the head of
Crimemaster then lifts Fisk into the air and sneers, "You will never
be anything like your father because you are an incompetent coward."
The masked mob boss flings Fisk towards the wall.
Fisk stands up unsteadily and tries to speak but nothing will come
out but gasps. Crimemaster picks up the gun that would have been used
on him and says, "So long Fisk. Like the flower you chose for your
name, it is your time to wilt."
Crimemaster fires the gun and a bullet zips through the air. As it
gets closer, Fisk grimaces and thinks, "This isn't over yet Os
thoughts are interrupted by the impact of the projectile.
The force of the bullet slams him against the wall again and then he
slumps to the floor. At that moment, Big Man enters the room.
Crimemaster throws the gun down beside Fisk's prone form. He turns to
his huge second-in-command.
"Dispose of him," Crimemaster orders and heads for the restroom.
Big Man lifts the dead weight and slings Fisk over his shoulders. The
huge criminal lumbers out the door and smiles with satisfaction.
The Forest Hills Home of Peter and Mary Jane Parker:
Peter walks in the front door to find Flash bouncing May on his knee.
Flash turns to see Peter and stands up. He brings May to Peter and
hands him his daughter. "Hey, Flash, what's up?" Peter asks.
"Nothing," Flash responds, "MJ just asked me to watch May while she
was at work. But, you're home now and I really have a date I have to
"Ah, a new girl for Mr. Thompson," Peter quips. "When do we get to
meet her? Who is she? What does she do?"
"I am running late as it is Mr. Twenty Questions. But, don't worry,
you will get to meet her soon," Flash responds.
Flash heads out the door and passes Anna Watson as she comes in. Anna
flashes a smile and closes the door.
"What an unexpected surprise," Peter states honestly. "What are you
doing here, Aunt Anna?"
"Haven't you talked to your wife, Peter?" Anna inquires. "I am here
to baby-sit while the two of you go to her premiere party."
Peter feels like he walked into the middle of the Twilight Zone. At
that instant, Mary Jane walks in the door. She grabs Peter by the arm
and starts to drag him upstairs. "Come on honey, we have to get
"Ready for what?" Peter tries asking as he hands May to Anna.
Once in their bedroom, Mary Jane tells Peter all about getting a
modeling job with O, this extremely trendy agency, and how they have
to go to her premiere party. Peter hates himself for what he is about
to do but he does have responsibilities.
"MJ, you are going to have to go without me and I will catch up," he
"What?!" she exclaims. "What do you mean without you. This is a big
moment for me. It is the start of my comeback and I need your
Peter frowns and replies, "I know and I am sorry but I have a meeting
over at Ben's house. We are about to break open a big story about the
Mafia Syndicate. I need the information so you know who can bring the
As tears begin to stream down her face, Mary Jane says, "I can't
believe this I am your wife! I need your support. You know who can
get his information later or never for all I care. You have a family
now Mr. Parker that should be your priority."
"That's not fair," shoots back Peter, "You knew who I was when you
married me and accepted me for who I am. You can't pull this kind of
"All I know is that you better get your priorities straight and then
decide what you want. Now I am going to this party and I guess you
are going to your meeting. Don't bother showing up at the party,"
Mary Jane yells!
She grabs her clothes and purse and storms out of the room. She
kisses Anna and May goodbye and stalks out the front door.
Peter waits for a moment and then flies down the stairs. Anna gives
him a cold look as he passes by. He gets out the door but Mary Jane
is gone already. He looks at his watch and sees that it is 8:00 pm.
He has just enough time to get to Ben's or he can go after his wife.
He says goodbye to May and Anna. "What choice do I really have?" he
thinks. Once out of sight, he changes into his familiar red and blue
and heads for Urich's Manhattan apartment.
