Koreans, so I guess the French are the best hope. To do this, the
French had to be beaten more seriously in their 1866 punitive
expedition to warrant a second, more brutal one. The foreign public
living in China actually demanded a second expedition. Perhaps by
bringing a journalist in the expedition to see the brutality of the
Koreans and so on. I think this larger second expedition may be more
successful, and may force the Daewongun to terms.
- I think a better scenerio might be if Korea really got bad after the
General Sherman Incident and the Americans really decide enough is
enough with these people by sending the real General William Tecumseh
Sherman over with troops to teach them a lesson.
I suspect the Americans might follow through along lines of Sherman's
Geargia Campaign. Lay waste to the countryside. Burn and destroy every
farm while pounding fortificatians with modern artillery and shooting
to pieces hatever troops send againt them but mostly starve them and
let hunger and disease and depression from the carnage do their work.
End Scenerio would be Korean leadership realize they don't need any
more of these round eye wakos. Need to get rid of them and modernize
rapidly to build up and make themselves strong enough to resist future
incursions. To this end they sue for Peace. A treaty of commerce is
negotiated. American officials offer repatriate all Korean Captives
they have (both soldiers and civillians) which Korean officials reject
as they see being taken prisoner disgrace. So said captives end up
dropped off in Hawaii to find work in the plantations while Korea sends
students all over western world to learn and study and bring things
back to Korea as Japan did to begin modernization.
