tj has a mystery to solve within the book, Land of Gold. I purchased a Blanding art piece called "Conchita" on the Blanding ebay site. I've been tracking its origin and have been unable to locate it in any of DB's authored books. I did find a poem entitled Conchita in James Neill North's book(1934) of this title. My mystery is that the poem is there but pages were cut out of my Land Of Gold book and so, the Conchita illustration I was looking for is missing. I looked through the Table of Contents and I don't find Conchita listed. So, I am looking for anyone else out there in cyberspace that has a copy of Land of Gold, and if so, would you turn to page 146/147/148/149/150 and tell me what you see. It appears that mine were cut out but then not being listed in the contents is sort of throwing me off.
Interestingly, the very first illustration shown in this book is one of the original art pieces I own and I've been looking for it also. I now know that this art piece is entitled, "Land of Gold" and is probably from 1934 or before. Pretty neat discovery for me...HELP ME ON THIS ONE!......tj

Tom, You solved your own mystery. The drawing CONCHITA you just bought on ebay was the featured artwork on page 147 in LAND OF GOLD...I just looked it up.

That's neat that you have another piece of original art from the
same book. Is it the 'sun over the water' in the front of the book?

It's a shame that you have a butchered copy of Land of Gold. There
are copies for sale on abebooks for as low as $115. My copy of the
book is actually signed by Don, number 467 of 500.

Thanks and yes my copy is totally butchered. I didn't pay a lot for it thank god and have had it for 4-5 years now. The missing pages were sliced out with a razor blade and hardly noticeable when you just flipped through it as I did. I'm going to buy another one from Mandarin books. She and I do a lot of stuff together at times. And yes the other original I own is the front piece, sun over the water. So now have two pieces from this book. It's kind of nice that it is the "title piece" in this book. There is no title on the back or anywhere else, so, I'm going to call it, Land of Gold from now on as I think that was the intent. What do you think? There is no doubt about authenticity. It's funny how you overlook things sometimes. tj
