Barbara: Welcome to the group and aren't you pleasantly surprised! It was 1962 in Seattle that I was introduced to Don Blandings Vagabond House book. Here it is, 41 years later and I'm still hooked. I have been lucky enough to find and buy about 6 of DB's original art pieces. None are of the spectactular category, but owning them is still fun. Go to Keith Emmons website also, he has a beautifully displayed website full of information. tj

      Dear Group,

I am very new to the e-group world of Don Blanding. I never dreamed
that my own interest in a man who wrote a short poem so long ago of
which I am very fond (One lei I will wear, it will not fade...)
would be shared by a community of people. As one individual wrote
previously, my introduction to Don Blanding has been kind of a
mystical experience.

I am a designer and a painter. Two years ago while researching
Hawaiian textiles I came across his poem above in a book about
Hawaiian shirts. I wrote down the poem and would glance at it now
and then. My 7 year old daughter and I memorized it. My interest
in Don Blanding seemed odd in a way; all I had was a short, albeit
sweet, poem. But for some reason, I was intrigued. Who was this man
Don Blanding. I hoped to come across more of his poetry.

My paintings are figurative and influenced by both early Chinese
figurative painting and by Hawaiian art, and some paintings have more
of an "island" feel than others. But coming across Don's little poem,
I had no insight into his interest in illustration and art, or that
somehow my own paintings would relate so much to who it seems Don
was/is all about.

I checked our on-line library cataloge to see if this author, who I
assumed to be pretty obscure, might have a book by him...they did...I
read several, and here I am...introducing myself to you all.

Yes, I do feel a connection to this man.
Don, I copied the poem and filed it away.
