Well, I just spent $75 on an original Hula Moon Musical Revue program from
1928. It's 19 pages, with photographs, illustrations, etc...

Don Blanding produced the show, wrote the lyrics, and designed the
costumes for this Junior League show.

      R. Alex Anderson wrote the music.

It came up on ABE today and I couldn't resist grabbing it, as I've never seen a
      copy up for sale before.

KEITH: This might be a second message...I hit a wrong key and the message disappeared...so, as I was saying, this sounds like a unique item and I wish I'd have seen it first. The Junior League show is interesting as I interviewed a 90+ lady at my Carmel show that had met DB in Hawaii in the 20's. She mentioned that she was a chorus girl in a Junior League show and danced as a flower! Does this script mention anything about that? When I asked her to describe DB, whom she met several times, she thought and pondered a moment and said, "He was carbonated".....now ain't that a great description! She said he just couldn't stand still and was always busy with something, just carbonated...bubbling over all the time......She was a real sweetheart of a lady. I don't know if she is still living or not. Several of the people interviewed have since passed on. On another note. I and my Blandingmobile spent the weekend at Inverness Calif. walking the town and talking to people about DB. I hit every store, every older person, the library, Post Office and even the polling booth for the day.....not one lead developed in the two days I was there. I stopped by the garage that I think Bev had mentioned but it was for sale and the owner was out fishing. The next day he was cleaning his fish....the next day he was out to lunch and not available...so, I had to leave with nothing but my blank notepad. Too bad. The only thing I found in my Oregon trip (did not get to Bend), was a new note card that I hadn't seen before. It is a light cardboard (bi-folded 12"x12"), blue in color with the Sweetheart vine and spider web imprinted on it. The wording on the opposite page is "cadena d' amor or chain of love" in heavy blue script. Below is the usual DB signature that was imprinted not original. I saw a Memory Room Book in Oregon that I did not buy that was inscripted, "To Mary, may the chain of love follow you". I hadn't seen the "Chain of Love" commentary before and it seemed interesting. Anyone out there ever see that before? Did DB start some kind of Chain of Love group or something? OK Keith, get to sluething. Good to be home again, off the road. The Blandingmobile shrinks in size each week we are in it...smile......tj

the program will credit both Don and Alex Anderson. Could you let me know if

I also believe "My Golden Shower Girl" and "My Hawaiian Memories" are also

I should get the Hula Moon program in the mail in the next few
business days. I can make a photocopy for you guys.

Incidentally, I also have a photocopy of Don's first Junior League
show program, Tropics Topics, that a friend of mine sent me a few
years back. It's about 20 pages long. I'll dig that up as well.

                      Keith,

Congratulations on finding the Hula Moon program, and the Tropic
                      Topics program for that matter.

Now all you need is the one for Dream Girls!

This past 4 months has been especially difficult for me and I have
not kept up with transcribing the material from the Star-Bulletin.
Earlier this week I finished reading both 1925 and 1953; the next
                      batch will be from 1954.

Among the piles of S-B stuff I have a number of articles about Hula
Moon, Tropic Topics and Dream Girls. I believe the articles contain
extensive lists of cast members and program details.

I will try to get started again on transcription, and organizing the
material into easily accessible binders and a database. My plans
were sidetracked by the illness and death of a close friend and now I
have some 30 boxes of collectibles from her estate to inventory and
sell. My living room looks like a warehouse, and just now I'm not
even sure where my Blanding files are!

                      But I will try.

                        Tom,

Here are the songs from the two musical programs that I have.
Blanding collaborated with R. Alex Anderson on both shows.

Girl of My Dreams - lyrics by Blanding, music by Anderson
Aloha Land - words and music by Anderson

Golden Shower Girl - lyrics by Blanding, music by Anderson

                        HULA MOON, May 2-4, 1928

The Rocking Chair Fleet - lyrics by Blanding
Why Kihi-kihis Swim Home - lyrics by Blanding, music by Anderson
Medley from Tropic Topics - music & lyrics by Anderson
Song of the Lei - lyrics by Blanding, music by Anderson
Good-Bye, Honolulu - music & lyrics by Anderson
Choosing Her Twosing - lyrics by Blanding, music by Anderson
My Flower of the Rainbow - lyrics by Blanding, music by Anderson

                        ----------------------

So Anderson did indeed completely write Haole Hula, as history
states. I wonder what happened to some of the other songs through the
                        passing of time.
