tj just got back from the Carmel area again. After much browsing, I came
up with an original March 5th 1937 Blanding Special Edition Pine Cone
Newspaper! What a nice find it was. It came from an estate sale and I got it
for a reasonable price. I've been seeking one of these for over 4 years now. I
also met some other people that had brief encounters with DB but they were
young and didn't remember a lot. They will take the message around again
though as they were excited that someone remembered him. Now they are
going out an talking to their lunch groups.....never know what will happen you
      know.....
Is everyone dead out there???? tj

        Aloha Tom,

Glad you had such good luck in Carmel. I tried to let you know that I met
Ouida Ball, Al Balls second wife. She still lives in Armine Von Tempsky & Al
s home in Manhattan Beach. Hal & I were out for a ride in the area and
stopped to check the address. I was taking a picture of the house when Ouida
came out and asked WHY ARE YOU TAKEING A PICTURE OF MY HOUSE? She was busy
and couldnt talk with me then, but we are to meet up again soon.

Send me your e-mail, as e-mails direct to you keep coming back.

        Bev.

tj is very interested in anything Von Tempski. I've been doing some separate info gathering and while in Carmel during the AT@T golf tournament I was downtown promoting info on her. Most people I talk with remember DB but no one remembers Armine.
She did live in and spend various periods of time in DB's Carmel home, especialy when he was away on lecture tours. I was hoping someone may have befriended her or remembered something about her. Never know though, I just keep talking and maybe someone will turn up that remembered her.
As a separate note. I am meeting with and befriending Carmels current poet laureate, Ric Masten. When he was 11 years old he lived across the street from DB and remembers going over to DB's home and having DB read poetry to him. Next time I meet with him I am bringing a load of my DB stuff with me that would have been current for his time in Carmel, hoping that it might jog Ric's memory a bit. I was trying to get Ric to remember what poems DB read. Ric is now 72 and has terminal prostate cancer. He wants to help me with this as he now is interested in just how much DB influenced his course of work and poetry having published some 15 books himself and also doing a lot of the artwork in his books.....sounds familiar, eh! Anyone interested can access his website at: www.sun-ink.com. He is a beautiful man who is now living his life of cancer through his poetry on-line. He is so positive and upbeat, it is worth the trip to visit his site. tj

            Hello, TJ...

You're back earlier than I expected! Nice find, indeed. You seem to
be unearthing some wonderful DB treasures. Hope you enjoyed the
sunshine and Pebble Beach; I watched part of the golf tornament and
kinda hoped you'd materialize on my TV screen....

For those who are snowed in, take care and be safe. The temps will
warm up in a couple of days and the beautiful snowdrifts will be just
a memory. Enjoy! (Spoken as a native Long Islander who well recalls
the blizzards of 1947 and 1966!)

Now that we've assembled, I'd like to take a moment to welcome the
newest member of our group. I'm not sure she's found her way to the
group website yet, but I know she's receiving e-mails. A note to me
last week indicated she's willing to share some interesting tidbits.
Her home is in the Islands and her surname is von Tempsky.

And TJ, you'll be happy to know you're not the only one just learning
about computers and websites and all that jazz!

So gather up your questions, and perhaps we can all learn more about
Armine, DB, Jack London and life in Hawaii.

tj is very interested in anything Von Tempski.

              Tom,
I got the article that Al Ball wrote about Armines brother Errol von
Tempsky. It is interesting to read, however, the printer at the College
              wasn
t working well. I have a bad copy of it and will try for another when I
              next
go up to UCLA. Then I can send it to you.

I am still working on the Flying Flapjack Ranch in Nevada from the Pine
              Cone
article you sent me. There are people in Lovelock researching it for us.
              I
will keep you posted on that. Do you know if Donnie Donner or Jack
              Hotaling
from that same article (3/11/38) are still in Carmel or have family there?

In a Carmel Pine Cone article (3/1/40) that you sent to me, it said the
              Ball
s stayed with Fredric Burt. Is that family still in Carmel and have you
              been
              able to talk with them?

Other names from the Pine Cone that may still be in Carmel and might
remember Don & Armine are: (11/8/40) Mrs. Wm. Francis Halyard, Mrs. Alton
Walker, Mrs. J.L Hughes, Mrs. E Van Zandt and Mrs. Whit Wellman of Carmel.

Have you met any of these folks or their families?

              Bev.
Bev: I haven't heard these names bantered about Carmel in my recent travels there. I have phone calls to several people right now that were around during this period of time but they were quite young then and so might not have been in those circles. But, I will present the names to them and see what they might come up with. Keep working on the Flying Flapjack Ranch thing....probably little left of it but you never know. I'm about 4 hours away from Reno and could go up there if you locate it or find something interesting. Thanks...good sluething on your part...thanks....tj
