Re: Honolulu Star-Bulletin September-December 1926
The artist for the themed advertising page, The Dream House, is
William Herwig, whose ad drawings sometimes carried the additional
attribution, "Mellen Associates." The page was scheduled to run on
Mondays in the Star-Bulletin.
Madge Tennent is another artist whose work was sometimes used in ads
and signed in a similar fashion.
By the way, Blanding was in very good company at the S-B. Other
staff artists in the 1920s were John Poole, John Kelly and Alex
MacLeod. Their signed illustrations appear with great regularity in
ads. Poole died in 1926 -- about age 38, as I recall; apparently he
was a mentor for the other, younger artists, and no doubt Blanding
knew him well. John Kelly's wife, Kate, was also a talented artist.
