Scott - Good question but I will not BS you... I have no "take" on how to answer your question. I have researched more about KGC activities in the West (Calif. & Nevada)which is where I live. Jesse to the best of my knowledge was not directly involved the the KGC in either of those states.

Your question however is one that some serious KGC researchers of that region would be better equipped to answer than I. That said you must always be aware of the fakes. They do exist. Without question I do believe JJ did leave his mark in that region, but with the passing of time the question of forgeries has arisen.

Much like the Dare Stones controversy, JJ was such a high profile person that he was frequently blamed for crimes that he could not have possibly committed. Likewise... is every stone that has his name or initials etched into it a true JJ autograph?

Since you said you have pinned down JJ to that area and have a time line for him being there you may truly be on his trail. But only hard research will move you closer to answering those questions. Sounds like you're doing a great job with research. I would recommend contacting some experts (not flakes) on JJ to ask about his signature. See what they have to say, there maybe a logical explanation for the "e."

Hang in there and best of luck. Hope you will one day lay your hands upon a treasure that was buried and last touched by JJ!!! That amigo would be cool. ;)

So if we assume the James boys were in fact members, I'd say they were likely introduced to the organization during the Civil War. It was at that time that the KGC withdrew their focus from Mexico and Central America in order to support the CSA and to act as recruiters throughout the West for the Confederate States Army / Navy. (See Chapman Affair-March 15, 1863, San Francisco, CA)

My best advice is to trust your own research and not that of others. There is also truly tons and tons of garbage out there related to your question. That said buddy... Best of luck to you!!! ;)
