      Hello Allison and Group,

Somebody made a flick out of the Hiler bomb plot, may have had Tom Cruise in it.  Rommel was involved with some of the plotters, maybe to assassinate Hitler but more to end the war so Stalin and the bolsheviks wouldn't get more of Germany.  When the Allies heard of it, they were glad the plot didn't succeed as they wanted Germany totally defeated and not have an armistice like the one that ended WW I.  It's been a long time since I dealt with this as an undergraduate.

Agreed, Andrew. Would ve been too dangerous to leave Germany in any state other than defeated. On Jul 20, 2013 11:25 PM, Andrew Jackson

And, in addition to the Cruise movie, there was a German-Austrian production in 2004, 'Operation Valkyrie', which was, off memory serves, a little more faithful to the source material. Aired about six or seven weeks ago on IFC.

              Hello Group,

Today, 28 June 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand the heir apparent to the Austrian throne and with that Emperor of Austria-Hungary. His wife was also killed. Austria would give Serbia, parts or all of which it long aspired to annex, an ultimatum it could not fulfill. With Germany giving a green light, the Austrian army would invade Serbia.

Russia mobilized, Germany feared a two front war and mobilized.  Mobilization was pretty much a declaration of war as it was technically too difficult to recall mobilized troops. Following the Schlieffen plan, Germany would hold in place on the eastern front and invade France through neutral Belgium.

Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the start of WW II when the German Army crossed into Poland and the Luftwaffe hit Polish airbases and important military targets.  The Asian phase involving Japan and China began a few years earlier.

                  Hello Group,

Yesterday was St. Valentine's day and also a historic anniversary for Chicago. It is the anniversary of the 1929 St. Valentine's Day massacre.  Six associates of Al Capone rival Bugs Moran and a mechanic got plugged in a garage on North Clark Street. Al Capone, conveniently, was out of town.

The Chicago city flag has four stars, each one marking a historic event.  One account is the stars mark the founding of Chicago at Fort Dearborn*, the great Chicago fire (1871), the St. Valentine's Day massacre, and the election of Mayor Daley** (1955).
