This is one of the few times I advocate zoos and wild animal parks. Wild is better, but if you're either going to become roadkill, someone's dinner, or just senselessly slaughtered, then bring 'em over. There are still a few rich cowboys who'd rather collect than kill.
Re: the woman who wishes to ship these animals, aside from your fine arguments, Allison, my take is this: this idiot woman doesn't know her biology and needs to go back to working for Peta (which requires a few insane neurons in their thinking) or Disney, which thinks animals can talk and reason. Can you imagine all of these captive bred animals being returned to the wild in Africa, where the new biosphere would be like nothing experienced before by these critters? Diet, habitat, habitual behavior, predators, diseases, parasites--all of these examples and more would shorten their lives to the point of extinction anyway.
Since these TX ungulates have no natural predators, hunting culls the packs of the weak so that those genes do not get passed along. Sounds like a plan to me. Wolves have been doing us that favor for years, but of course, now we thank them by eradicating their numbers (after spending tons of tax dollars to reboost their numbers).
Gah. And SHE gets to be on "60 Minutes?" The real issue here is that another religious group is being targeted by another regime for more ridiculous reasons. Now that story deserves a spot on CBS's formerly Emmy award winning series.
Lord love a duck.

There was a segment on the repopulation of exotic animals on Texas ranches.... this has been going on for a long time. I remember back in 1979, my then boyfriend had a cousin that worked on the Y-O ranch near Kerrville, TX and we went on a lonnnggg jeep ride through the ranch looking for oryx and those antelopes with the twisted horns and zebra, etc. We didn't find a one but that was when they were just getting started ...now they have hundreds of animals... and they pay for this by letting hunters hunt 10% of the herd. Well there is this lady that opposes that, she wants the animals to go back to Africa, the country where they were nearly hunted to extinction in the first place. WTF? AFrica can't even manage their human population without genocide, what makes her think the animals will be safe there?
