Teaching given by Égún TATA G, Spiritual Emissary of Baba Oduduwa:

A sister asks us about this subject, and here is the answer that TATA G gave us.

IFÁ Ceremony of Consecrating the Hands of the "Oriate" from Ódùn Ifá of Irete Kutan

ÉGÚN TATA G: In regards to this case, this ceremony that is perform in the "Yoruba Diaspora" by the Ifá priest, ¿it is done for what purpose? In Africa in recent times, the people who Consecrated Orishas were Ifá priest. In America a ceremony was created to find out which Òrìsà Alagbatori (Ruling Orisha) the person has.

Note: In Africa, the people of the Oshuns village were all sons of Oshun, and so on with the different Orishas. In this case, there was a ceremony done in Africa, that they cut the wrist of the initiate, and they put there some specific herbs (Ewe) so this would give him Power to the "Barber" (Oriate) of the Orisha Crowning Ceremony (Sodo Orisha or Joko Òòsá). The Power given to the Barber of the Orisha is one to help him Cut the Hair over the head (around Ori area). This is to do the "INSO EBO LERI" or doing the EBO of the Head, this means that when you Head – Consciousness (ORI) gives away the Hair, this Hair is the Sacrifice, the Offering (The EBO) done by the "Leri" (Ori). The Hair is the Offering given by the Person who is initiated in the Òòshá Tradition.

It's true that some ceremonies were practiced for the benefit of the ORIATE in some Lineages of Ifá. This ceremonies are done for the Initiate that Cut and Shaves the Hair on the head of the New Initiate, or the one who "Opens the ORI", that also why is called ORI ATE, or the one who Consecrates Òòshá, and another meaning of Ori Ate is the who puts the Head (Leri or Ori) on the Straw Mat (Ate). But the true interpretation is, the one who opens the Consciousness or ORI and later deposits over the straw mat (this is done when the Oriate opens the Orisha Oracle for the New Initiate and reveals the Divine Plan that the Orisha wishes to reveal through the Oracle Ódùn or Sign that is going to rule the Life of the Person).

Note: In the African Diaspora in Cuba, the OBA is the initiate who controls the ceremony of the Orisha initiation, and the term ORI ATE is used to refer to the person who performs the Oracle reading for the new Initiate on the ITA Ceremony (coming from the Yoruba word "Eeta" = Third day of initiation of the initiation ceremony, that is usually the day of Oracle Readings in Orisha and Ifá ceremonies).

ÉGÚN TATA G: Truly to an OBA, the person needs to be an ORI ATE. Why? Because this persons has to cut and shave the head, he has to open the Consciousness (ORI) and then after he has done that, he has to deposit the ORI of the ORISHA en the Straw mat (Ate), the so called ITA (Eeta) Ceremony, that's why the Ori Ate is the one who puts the Orisha Consciousness over the mat with the revelation of the specific Cowry shells (how many mouths up) who are up, and this is given by the Orisha to the new initiate. The ceremony for the consecration of the hands of the Oriate is correct, but the way it is done it's in the afrocuban Diaspora is not completely correct. There are some Lineages of Ifá in Africa that practice a similar ceremony, but they "Cut" the wrist of the person and they put special Ewe (herbs) inside, this is done to give ASHE (Power) for example to the Drum Players, to give them the Ashe of the Orisha ANYA. In other ceremonies is done to give Ashe (Power) to the Ifá Priest, it's also done for Osanyin Initiation, and also for other Ifá ceremonies. When they put the Ewe (herbs) under the skin, this makes the hands Sacred. This ceremony is related to the Ódùn Ifá (Ifá Oracle sign) of IRETE KUTAN (Irete Ogunda), Obara di, and Ogunda Kete (Ogunda Irete who is where the Barber of Olofin manifests). The Barber is a reference to the Oriate who cuts and shaves the head.

Commentary: In Africa the Priest of the Orisha does the Orisha initiation, the Shango Priest does Shango initiations and so forth…

ÉGÚN TATA G: Now a day's those ceremonies of Orisha consecration are done but more focused on Ifá. In some areas the Orisha priest do the ceremonies, in other areas is done by Ifá priests.

Question: In ancient times, like the times of baba Oduduwa, this was different?

Before in ancient times, Òòshá was one thing and Ifá was another one.

About the "IGBÁ ÀSHE" that is given to ORI ATE:

Answer by TATA G: This is the concentration of the Force or the Power, it's given to give Power to the Oriate to do the ceremonies. This so called "Igbá Àshe" is like a type of a so called "Inshe Osain" of the Ifá Diaspora, like an Amulet to give Power, this was done in Cuba. Also in some parts of Africa they give an "Igbá Àshe".

Baba Oduduwa was the one who first initiated people into the Òòshá Tradition (that was 20,000 years ago). Oduduwa was the first King of OYO (also he was the founder of the Yoruba Tradition together with the 16 Elders or Kings. According to Yoruba knowledge, if you don't have a specific Orisha, but you know the secret on how to do the ceremonies for that Orisha, then you can do the ritual work for that Orisha. This comes since the beginnings of the tradition, who initiated Baba Oduduwa? Nobody did, Oduduwa himself did a ceremony, and he consecrated himself (he did a Self-Initiation based on the Secrets he knew). Oduduwa possessed knowledge and secrets on all the 601 Irúnmòle.

Note; Oduduwa knew about the higher 601 Irúnmòle Òrun and the Irúnmòle Nlá, and he knew about OLÓFIN (the first Irúnmòle Nlá or Conscious Manifestation of God who came out of the Universal Neutral Energy called by name Olodumare or the Energy Matrix of Creation who is an Unconscious Divine aspect of what we can call God Almighty).

Question: In baba Oduduwa's times, when there were not Orishas, but they had the knowledge of the IRUNMOLE, when Oduduwa initiated the Human Female we know as Oshun, What Magical Sigil they scratch over her head?

Answer by Égún TATA G: Odùdúwà put the Magical Sigil (symbol) of the Irúnmòle Oshun (or also called Oshun Òrun) Odùdúwà also initiated the human male we know as OGUN, and he put the Irúnmòle Ògún Magical Sigil, and so on with all the people he initiated, he knew which Irúnmòle they belong to. Each one of the 401 humans who reach the level of ÒRÌSÀ was consecrated with the energy of a specific Irúnmòle (out of the 601 Irúnmòle).

Note by Awo Ifalenu:  Odùdúwà knew all the 601 Irúnmòle and he knew to whom each human initiate belong, and he put the Secret Irúnmòle Sigil or Symbol over the head of the initiate, he cut or scratch the symbol over the crown area of the head in that way he Open the Ori to the Irúnmòle, and the term Orisha for Baba Odùdúwà means Consciousness open to the Divine. In those Great Times, there was a Divine Edict from Olofin, who was going to choose 400 Humans to become what we call now as ÒRÌSÀ (Out of this group 200 would be Merciful and 200 Wrathful). When those humans who were selected out of the people that were consecrated with the Irúnmòle Sigil to become Orisha ended his life, there human body went through a process of spontaneous combustion (liberating all the Energy and Consciousness) after that they became Orisha in the spiritual world. The first human to become Orisha who receive Baba Odùdúwà's Initiation was Ògún, the number 399 to become Orisha was Yemoyale, the 400 was Oya, and later Oshun who saved Humanity became the Orisha 401. Oshun was placed in the Neutral Zone in between the 200 Severe and the 200 Peaceful Orishas. Oshun can be very Sweet and very Severe, she also can control the 201 Neutral Irúnmòle, and she is the Orisha most close to Olofin. She is the more complex Orisha, she represents the energy of "Constant Imperfection-Evolution", similar to a human that considers himself imperfect and constantly is seeking perfection and evolution to a better way of being, to a higher type of being, and this is something Égún TATA G said about Oshun recently.

About the Ceremonies of Consecration of the Hands and the Cutting of the Wrist:

This Ceremonies in the Yoruba Esoteric Ifá Tradition that Baba Odùdúwà is bringing, are done in different ways depending on the type of Ifá Ceremony, for the Vow of the Apetebi Ceremony, the woman goes through a special ceremony that includes wrist cutting. The new Ifá initiates (in Itefa) goes through a wrist cutting ceremony, the people who receive Osanyin of the Ifá Tradition also goes through a Wrist cutting ceremony, and there are others.

In ancient times they used a very sharp type of grass. In the cut area they introduce certain secret ingredients, special Iyefa (Ifá powder), Ewefa (Ifá herbs) that give Power and they also Protect from any kind of Hexing, Witchcraft, Curse and evil so they can't enter the beyond this area of the hands, so they won't affect the body of the Ifá priest. To the Oriate (or Orisha Head Priest in the Orisha initiation ceremony) they can do a similar type of ceremony to bless and consecrate the hands, this is related to the Ódùn Ifá called "IRETE KUTAN", Obara-di and Ogunda kete. In Nigeria now they use a piece of glass to make some cuts around the wrist and later they put some Ewe (herbs) that are previously prepared. The best thing is to cut around the whole wrist area, because it gives protection around the wrist. Different things are done according to the Ifá ceremony, some use certain preparations with animals other herbs and Iyefa.

In some ceremonies is done to give Ashe (Power) to the hands, in other types of ceremonies is done to repelled evil, hexing, negative energies, and witchcraft from entering the body of the initiate. Also some ceremonies are done on the ankles with similar purpose. In the case of the Oriate, the ceremony is done to help him cut the hair, that hair is charge with the negative energies of sickness, death, curse, and negative karma of the person, so the oriate is protected from this in a deeper way.

Note; Sorry for any mistakes on this english translation I did.

Hand of an Awo Ifá, here you can see the Scar at the wrist, this is part of some Ifá Ceremonies that they cut the Wrist of the new initiate, here is done following the secrets of Baba Oduduwa in his Esoteric Yoruba Lineage of Ifá. This ceremony is done in the ITEFA or Ifá Consecration, also in Osanyin ceremony, Igbá Odù and others, following Baba Oduduwa's teaching in his tradition. Also the Ceremony of the Apetebi in this Esoteric Ifá lineage, the woman goes through something similar at the wrist. Each ceremony has its particularities in the way it is done and the ritual process. This type of ceremony gives Power and consecrates the hands of the Ifá priest, in ancient times they used a very sharp type of grass. In the cut area they introduce certain secret ingredients, special Iyefa (ifá powder), Ewefa (Ifa herbs) that give Power and they also Protect from any kind of Hexing, Witchcraft, Curse and evil so they can't enter the beyond this area of the hands, so they won't affect the body of the Ifá priest. To the Oriate (or Orisha Head Priest in the Orisha initiation ceremony) they can do a similar type of ceremony to bless and consecrate the hands, this is related to the Ódùn Ifá called "IRETE KUTAN", Obara-di and Ogunda kete. Here you see the IDEFA (Ifa bracelet) with the ancient true Ifá color of Green and Orange, Ifa colors are reffered as OTUTU and OPON (Fresh and Warm Colors). Baba Oduduwa said that was the original Ifá colors used by Orunmila, the Orange represents the synthesis of of Knowledge and Wisdom.

Santo. Blessings came to Ile. There have a lot of info directly from Egun but also a lack of Knowledge because interpretation of the Reality of Ocha on the Diaspora. How many Oriates have Igba Iwa in the Diaspora is an evidence of the conditioning of Ifa priest to Ife parameters that have nothing to do with Ocha and the divinization of Obases upon Lukumi tradition. Bogbo to Ache Olodumare. Obakinioba Obatesi http://www.munanso.com

          Question: In baba Oduduwa's times, when there were not Orishas, but they had the knowledge of the IRUNMOLE, when Oduduwa initiated the Human Female we know as Oshun, What Magical Sigil they scratch over her head?                                                                                                                                                                   nbsp;                                                                                                                                                                &n bsp;
