We will have our monthly meeting this coming Monday on the 5th of May. The information is below. I hope to see everyone there. Two reminders should go out starting this evening.
TOPIC: "Birmingham Iron Ore: solving the ironstone enigma"
SPEAKER: Tim Chowns, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of West Georgia
ABSTRACT: Dr. Tim Chowns is a professor emeritus in the Department of Geosciences at the University of West Georgia. A native of England, Dr. Chowns joined the Geology Department in 1973 after teaching for five years at the University of Georgia. He holds a bachelors degree from the University of Leicester and a PhD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (both in England).
Over the years he has taught classes in Physical Geology, Historical Geology and Oceanography as part of the core curriculum as well as classes for geology majors in his areas of specialization; Stratigraphy, Sedimentation and Microscope studies.
His research includes papers on the origin of geodes, the origin of sedimentary ironstones (especially the Birmingham iron ores), deep structure beneath the Georgia coastal plain and changes on the Georgia coast resulting from rising sea levels. .
