      GRADUATE CONFERENCE IN SOUTHERN HISTORY
      MARCH 23-24, 2001

      SPONSORED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI

      KEYNOTE SPEAKER
      PROFESSOR DAN T. CARTER, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA Author of The
      Politics of Rage: George Wallace, the Origins of the New
      Conservatism, and the Transformation of American Politics; and
      Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South.

      M.A. and Ph.D students are encouraged to submit papers concerning
      any aspect of southern history from the colonial period to the
      present. Comparative studies are also welcome.

      This year's conference bears the title "Southern Politics: Past and
      Present." Students with a special interest in southern political
      history are encouraged to submit papers, but we remind you that
      papers concerned with ALL areas of southern history are welcome.

      To Present:

      1. Please submit a two page abstract which discusses the paper's
      thesis, sources, and conclusions with a brief curriculum vitae by
      January 20, 2001.

      2. If your submission is selected you will be notified by February
      1, 2001.

      3. Completed papers MUST be received by February 24, 2001 to secure
      a place on the program. Conference presentations should not exceed
      twenty minutes in duration and papers should be limited to 10-12
      pages.
