THE CITADEL CONFERENCE ON THE SOUTH
      APRIL 6, 7, 8, 2000

The Citadel will host its sixth conference on the South on April 6, 7,and 8,
2000. The Conference will feature approximately 15 panel sessions where
visiting scholars present and comment on papers dealing with aspects of
Southern History from the colonial period through the twentieth century.

The Conference will be held on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, South
Carolina. Founded in the 1670s, the peninsula city is noted for its
well-preserved eighteenth and nineteenth century homes, its scenic harbor
guarded by Fort Sumter, and the spectacular, springtime beauty of its gardens.

Previous Citadel Conferences on the South have generated four books of essays:
FROM THE OLD SOUTH TO THE NEW (1981), THE SOUTHERN ENIGMA (1983), DEVELOPING
DIXIE (1988), and LOOKING SOUTH (1989). A similar book of essays from the
      forthcoming conference is planned.

All persons interested in presenting papers or serving as commentators at the
conference are cordially invited to submit proposals and accompanying vitas by
October 1, 1999 to: THE CITADEL CONFERENCE ON THE SOUTH, C/O W. B. Moore, or
Jr., David H. White, Jr., or Kyle S. Sinisi, Department of History, The
      Citadel, Charleston, SC 29409.

E-mail inquiries should be sent to: Bo.Moore@..., WhiteD@...,
      or SinisiK@....
