      Gospel Quartet Scholar Doug Seroff
Doug Seroff has been researching and writing about African-American vernacular music for over 30 years. Much of his research concerns the gospel singing traditions of the Jefferson County area of Alabama. Archivist Kevin Nutt discusses this gospel singing traditions with Mr. Seroff. A strong public school music program during the 1920s and 1930s and the presence of talented, community “quartet trainers” are two of the characteristics Mr. Seroff discusses that contributed to what became known as the Birmingham Sound.
