      Dear Friend of the Humanities:
       
      I am writing to invite you to submit a nomination for the 2011 Alabama Humanities Award. Below you will find additional information about the award. This prestigious award is given annually to an individual in Alabama who has made an exemplary contribution to the public understanding and appreciation of the humanities. The award will be presented at the Alabama Humanities Awards luncheon on Monday, September 26, 2011, in Birmingham. Past award recipients have included Edgar Welden, Senator Richard Shelby, Jack Warner, Harper Lee, Dr. Neal Berte, Dr. Wayne Flynt, Odessa Woolfolk, and Winton Blount, among many others. 
       
      As a leader in Alabama, you are aware of individuals whom you feel are deserving of consideration. I hope you will review the criteria and procedures for making a nomination. Please note the April 8 nomination deadline.

      Request for Nominations: Deadline April 8, 2011

      The Alabama Humanities Foundation invites nominations for the Alabama Humanities Award. This prestigious award is given annually to an individual who has made an exemplary contribution to the public understanding and appreciation of the humanities.
       
      HUMANITIES—those branches of learning (history, language, literature, philosophy, arts, ethics, etc.) that seek to understand and interpret the human condition.
       
      ELIGIBILITY—Native Alabamians or Alabama residents who have made substantial contributions to the humanities; or other living persons who have made substantial contributions specifically to the humanities in Alabama. These contributions might include volunteer leadership on behalf of a cultural or educational institution, significant scholarly achievement, outstanding teaching of the humanities, or public advocacy that embodies the values and perspectives of the humanities. Current members of the AHF board and staff are ineligible.
       
      NOMINATION PROCEDURE—Individuals, groups, or organizations may submit a letter of nomination. The letter should not exceed three pages in length and should describe the contributions of the person nominated. A vita must also be included. Self nomination is permitted. Nominations remain active for one year.
