To Kill a Mockingbird Turns 50
Join us as To Kill a Mockingbird turns 50
July 8-11, 2010 - Monroeville, Alabama
Cities and towns across America are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird this summer, but the epicenter of all commemorations will clearly be Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Ala. The Monroe County Heritage Museum has an entire weekend of 50th Anniversary events scheduled for July 8-11, 2010 including seminars, a marathon reading of the novel in the historic courtroom where parts of the novel are set, great food, walking tours and more. The weekend ends with a birthday party on the courthouse lawn on Sunday afternoon, July 11.
The Alabama Center for Literary Arts and the Alabama Writers Symposium are proud to be participating. On Thursday, July 8, at 2 p.m., Mockingbirdscholar and frequent AWS participant Dr. Nancy Anderson will be on campus to lead a discussion on Miss Lee and her novel. She will be joined by a musician playing original songs based on the book's characters. Rare and foreign editions of the novel will be on display in the College Library.
Three Harper Lee Award winners will participate in the marathon read over the weekend: Sonja Sanchez, Madison Jones and Rebecca Gilman.
