The Archival Training Collaborative (ATC) - Looking for good, inexpensive, modern archival training?

      Greetings all,

A workshop is being offered on July 16, 2010, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History in Montgomery, Alabama. The focus of the workshop will be on arranging, describing and preserving archival collections at historical societies, genealogical collections, libraries, church archives, county archives, municipal archives, or any other institution that does not have full-time trained archival staff, or where the staff would like some additional training in arrangement, description and basic preservation skills. Everyone is welcome. Please let everyone who might be interested in this workshop know about this opportunity.

Every institution faces different challenges in dealing with its archival collections.  Before “leaping in” to handle collections, some basic skills come in handy.  As a participant in this one-day workshop you will learn to identify and list what you have, how much you have, organize your collections, perform basic preservation on records that need it, and make those records accessible to those who want to use them.

This workshop highlights hands-on activities and readings to illustrate the methods for processing archival collections. Lunch and resources will be provided.  This workshop will be divided into four parts:

      1)      Determining the origins of the collections to the best of your ability

      2)      Arranging collections effectively

      3)      Preserving records as effectively as possible

      4)      Describing records so that researchers can find them

For more information please go to http://www.archivaltraining.org/alabamaworkshops.html and click on “Click Here to Register” for the Registration Form and click on “More Information” for the flyer.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, please print out the Registration Form, making your check or money order out to: Friends of the Archives and put ATC July Workshop in the memo field. Please fill out the registration form. Send it, along with your registration fee of $30.00, to ATC Workshop, ATTN: Tracey Berezansky, Alabama Dept. of Archives and History, 624 Washington Avenue, Montgomery Alabama, 36130-0100.  These instructions are also located on the Registration Form itself.

We look forward to seeing you in Montgomery on July 16.

      Thank you, Mike
