      The Alabama Stories team joins together to honor the Alabama winners of the 2008 Reading Rainbow Young Writers & Illustrators Contest   for grades K-3. State winners were selected in each of the grade levels, and the first-place winners will go on to compete on the national level. Alabama Stories also explores the writing world today with interviews of several authors at the 2008 Alabama Book Festival.

      **1993 May 30- Herman "Sonny" Blount joins the ancestors in Birmingham , Alabama at

      the age of 79. He had been a prominent jazz bandleader, arranger

      and pianist. He was better known as "Sun Ra," and was the founder

      of Saturn Records. Three documentaries produced about Sun Ra

      were "The Cry of Jazz" (1959), "Space is the Place" (1971) and "Sun

      1971 May 30- Willie Mays scores his 1,950th run.

      1965 May 30- Vivian Malone becomes the first African American to graduate from

      the University of Alabama , a college that had been one of the last
