      **CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF ALABAMA POWER COMPANY LECTURE JANUARY 31

         Leah Rawls Atkins, author of "DEVELOPED FOR THE SERVICE OF ALABAMA':
       THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF THE ALABAMA POWER COMPANY, 1906-2006, will speak at a special program to be held on Wednesday, JANUARY 31 at 4 p.m.
      in the Special Collections and Archives Department, located on the GROUND FLOOR of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.  A reception will follow.

         This lecture is being sponsored by the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts, the Center for the Arts and Humanities, and the A.U.
      Libraries.  This lecture is part of a statewide series on the history of the Alabama Power Company supported by the Alabama Power Foundation.

      1944 January 26 - Angela Yvonne Davis is born in Birmingham, Alabama.  Active in             civil rights demonstrations and in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, she will be fired twice from the University of California at Los Angeles because of her Communist Party affiliation and she will successfully sue for reinstatement.  A philosopher and author, she will flee the law after being implicated in the 1970 Soledad Brothers shooting. After sixteen months in jail, she will be acquitted of all charges.
